I had a vasectomy about 10 years ago, and let me tell you it is the gift that keeps on giving.

I never wanted kids. My entire life I knew I didnt' want kids and yet people kept telling me "oh you'll change your mind", but I didn't. All around me I had friends who were getting the "Oh honey, guess what we're having!!" talk sprung on them by wives/girlfriends. I literally knew ZERO guys who had a say in the fact that they were becoming a father...I did not want that to happen to me.

So I had the vasectomy. It was no big deal, took like 10 minutes total. Don't let anyone tell you to dress loose, you want TIGHT underwear because you feel every jiggle in your nuts for the next week. Also, you can safely ignore the "put frozen peas on it". If you like frozen nuts, that's fine, but it was far more uncomfortable to ice my sack than the minor discomfort from the operation.

I went to Best Buy and shopped for new a television an hour after the operation.

The most interesting thing I found was how much MORE I enjoyed sex afterwards. Apparently the fear/terror of having an unwanted pregnancy forced on me was in my subconscious without ever realizing it. Once it was gone, it was amazing what an invisible weight was lifted.

The sad state of affairs is men have zero reproductive rights. People will look you right in the face and feel like they're being completely logical while saying "If you don't want kids, then don't have sex". These same people would call you a religious right wing misogynistic bastard for saying the exact same thing to a woman, but it is what it is.

Vasectomy IS the right answer for a man who doesn't want kids. The dirty secret is condoms fail SPECTACULARLY, and are at best a backup method of birth control...yet they're pitched as the "be safe" method.

As far as effect on relationships, I've dated many girls since then and never brought it up with most of them. Once you say 'I don't want kids", it's none of their business that you CAN'T.

I thought it also led to higher prostate risks later in life as well?

Looks like no one answered your questions. Had the vasectomy on a Friday and by Saturday night was fine. Very little pain. Had no impact on relationships other than you don't have to worry about getting the female pregnant. Suffered no other adverse effects.

Bag of frozen peas on the jublies for a couple days, and I was good to go. Basically I got snipped on a Friday afternoon, lounged around for the weekend, and was back at work on Monday with no issues.

I had a vasectomy a little over 3 months ago and I have been in pain ever since. Getting it was the worst decision I have made in my life. I went from being very active to absolutely sedentary overnight. I have also given up sex, it is just too painful afterwards. I wish you the best of luck if you decide to go ahead and get it done. However, I would strongly suggest you reconsider.
