In-group bias social construct or biological?

A societal reaction to biological differences, throughout history men have sacrificed to provide for and protect women. Long before humans had the mental capacity necessary to perpetuate the systemic oppression of a people on the basis of sex, it was very primitive and has existed long before feminism. These sacrifices used to be something masculinity was celebrated & rewarded for. Today it still seems to be expected of men, but in a completely non-reciprocal manner. I don't think biology is necessarily a justification for adhering to sexist gender expectations. Much of what being civilized is, is maintaining rationality in spite of our neanderthal origins. If we simply allowed biological impulses to control us we'd still be killing, raping and pillaging other tribes and would have never advances as far as we have as a society.

In terms of in-group bias I know studies using examples such as pushing a man or woman in front of a train; both men and women are more hesitant about pushing the woman. I'm no evolutionary biologist but I'd presume most (heterosexual) people should have some sort of out-group bias in other aspects. Men and women are attracted to each other and want a mate from the opposite sex, they are both competing in some form or other for the attention of the opposite sex.

eg. Most slutshaming of women comes from other women, most bullying of men comes from other men, most bullying of women comes from other women, etc
