I was eating dinner with the TV on earlier tonight. Wheel Of Fortune was on. I saw a big banner on the wheel that said FATHERS WEEK.
And two of the three contestants were women.
Rage flared in me. Even though I also felt a bit of surprise that fathers were even mentioned outside of father's day, I couldn't fathom the opposite happening; of two men being contestants during a mother's week.
Then a few seconds later they showed the wheel again and it actually said TEACHERS WEEK. The cursive font had made the T look like an F.
I cringed a bit. And then I realized that this was a perfect little lesson.
Don't be so quick to take offense that you end up misinterpreting what you see. Read carefully. Beware of the addictive allure of righteous anger.
I think that's good advice for anyone in any kind of protest or social awareness movement. Just because you're right about many things doesn't mean you can't be wrong sometimes too.
If nothing else, being calm and taking time to make sure we understand what we're angry about is a good strategical move. Anger is a weapon only to one's opponent, after all.
