About 4 1/2 years ago, my wife decided to end our marriage. When I discovered that she was having an affair during the later part of our marriage, I knew there would be no reconciliation between us. That is something that is entirely unforgivable in my mind.

We have two children who were affected by the separation. I fought tooth and nail to ensure that I had shared custody and 50/50 week-about access to them. I was never a father not to be involved with their lives, and I wasn't about to stop because someone decided to make a mistake in the marriage.

Since that time, she has been extremely hostile towards me. In the beginning, she tried desperately to manipulate me and make my life as miserable as she could (refused to help pay for any of the joint loans we had accumulated...even though most of it was her student loans; demanded we sell the house that we had bought less than a year earlier which I said I would be willing to pay the mortgage for as long as I remained in the house). I cut all my financial ties with her.

When the kids spend the week at their mother's, I try to give them a quick call just to see how their day was, and wish them goodnight. When I do get a chance to talk to them, I keep it short and concise.

Last year, she cancelled her home phone service and refused to give me her cell phone number. That's fine, I have no intention to talk to her anyways...though, if there's an emergency of some kind, it would be helpful to have a way to contact her. So, I responded with getting a cell phone for them to use, so they can call me or I can call them.

The problem is, though, when they go to her house, she takes the cell phone from them and turns it off. So now, there's no way for me to contact them when they are with her.

Am I asking too much to be able to talk to my kids when they're away?
