Just speculating...

When men congregate in a work context, in corridor conversation or over lunch, in my experience, discussion takes the form of men telling each other various stories and explanatory theories, often about the job, but it may extend to the industry at large or politics, but is rarely personal. On top of this, there is no obligation to actually agree. It's like a group exploration of how to conceptualize the environment we live in. There's a purpose to all this. It creates consensus around the job, and drives team cohesion. It's what we've been doing around the fireplace for thousands of years.

From there, once you're doing work, decision are often made unilaterally, but with a prior knowledge that consensus on the criteria for those decisions already exists. No conflict ensues.

When women congregate, most of the conversations seem to incorporate a personal element, even if they start from a work context. My wife can spent 5 minutes with a female complete stranger and come away with their entire extended family history, who they've currently fallen out with, and which of their kids is struggling at school.

From there, when women come to making work decisions, they still want some interactive consensus process.

Now, imagine what happens when these two modes cross paths.

A woman joins a traditionally male industry. No problem there, but then comes the first work group conversation. If the men actually try to accept her as part of the group, they will offer their stories. To the woman, this will sound like impersonal dictatorial statements about how to think. Perception of "Mansplaining" right there, and she offers no stories in return so comes off to the men as aloof. Next thing, on the job, decisions are being made, with zero visible signs of consensus. She gets shitty and the guys are left wondering WTF her problem is.

If you reverse the situation, men end up with a perception of a workplace where everyone wants to probe your personal life, and there's no way to achieve the autonomy you need to just make decisions and get on with things without accusations of not working well with others.
