Less than 1 in 500 women are raped in the USA and more men are raped in the USA than women.

The 25% figure comes from a debunked Mary Koss study (the figure was actually 20% or 1 in 5) and is too stupid to warrant proper consideration:

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

ie: As it's the article that's making the claim, it's the article's job to support it. If it doesn't, then it's a fluff piece built on confirmation bias and you can safely disregard it.

The 25% claim is a Woozle - "False Evidence By Citation" - ""Results of a weak study may be repeated so many times in different sources (e.g., professional journals) that they (undeservedly) achieve the status of a law."."

The latest US Government figures (2014) are not 1 in 5 - they are 0.03.

New DOJ Data On Sexual Assaults: College Students Are Actually Less Likely To Be Victimized

The full study, which was published by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, a division within DOJ, found that rather than one in five female college students becoming victims of sexual assault, the actual rate is 6.1 per 1,000 students, or 0.61 percent (instead of 1-in-5, the real number is 0.03-in-5). For non-students, the rate of sexual assault is 7.6 per 1,000 people.
