With family DNA testing, quite a few people are finding out that they were raised by parents from whom they are not actually related. They call is NPE, which originally stood for Non-Paternal Event, but the term has been changed to stand for Not Parent Expected. However, almost all of the unexpected parents are men, of course. There is never any doubt about who the real mother is. The situation is common enough that there is a website designed to help people cope with the sudden realization that one of their "parents" is not really a parent at all.

I first heard about it on the radio last year. A father and his daughter told the girl's mother they were going to have a family DNA test done. The father and daughter were really excited about it and assumed the mother would be excited too. But instead of being excited, she turned white as a ghost. She spoke privately with the husband and forewarned him about what they were about to discover. Then they had to figure out how to tell the daughter.
