My girlfriend and I have been discussing the classic woman-berates-significant-other trope since seeing it exemplified in an episode of Dr. Who last night (in the opening words of the script). A few minutes later she threatens to "detach something" from him for speaking for her.

Our interest is in why this is attractive in a character. Why do people like this? It seems to cause admiration, but we can't think of a strong explanation. Looking for your opinions, but science is even better.
