Aaron Feis, the security guard and assistant football coach at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who became a human shield to protect students from the gunman in the recent Florida shooting, and thus lost his life. He was truly a hero. I hope he knew he would be regarded as such in his final moments.

This is the part of masculinity that you won't hear most feminists talk about. They and some misandrist progressives are too busy interrogating aspects of "masculinity" they find problematic to attribute anything positive to men. To be frank, it is not often women who are sacrificing themselves to save others, but we find that truth to be far less comfortable than the statistic of men causing the most violence.

His sacrifice is not mine. I'm a different man. I no more deserve credit for his sacrifice than I do blame for the crimes of other men. I wish everybody realized this. Some people are smug in their indictment of individuals for the sin of being born in certain groups, but hypocritically will not extend grace to the individual in recognition of the group's accomplishments.

If anyone feels like I'm politicizing an act of heroism that should not be tarnished with identity politics, feel free to call me out. However, please know that this is not my intention. I simply want to honor the bravery of a man who gave the ultimate sacrifice for others, while pointing out how certain ideologues will refuse to recognize him and people like him. He deserves to be honored by all, even those whose political agendas are unserved by his example.
