sociality in large part is like an act or a play on a stage. better actors get first choice of what character they would like to play, some of us get forced into roles we are not as satisfied with but we all want to be in the play, after all we could always opt out of it all together.

gender roles are like a form of flirting that has been ingrained into our psychology and actually displays more of a similarity between the genders than a large difference, we all like the drama of associating with our polar opposites, that's what drives the story. I don't view a 'submissive' gender role as implying inferiority or a dominant role as superiority, they are games we play with eachother.

what is flirting, why do we flirt? its a sort of game, so we do it for fun because we like being playful and we do it to encourage an attraction in ourselves by helping people escape their mundane reality by acting more childlike. so gender roles serve as a sort of playful pretend to struggle type game and a way of attracting the opposite sex.

have you ever noticed how flirting can quickly go from teasing to something resembling a physical stuggle? like a poking match or a tickling match or a wrestling match. have you ever had a girl keep tickling you to the point where you had to pin her down to the floor to save yourself, only to find that is what she was trying to get you to do the whole time? (more like foreplay at that point but you get the point). gender roles manifest themselves as a sort of struggle between two opposites but I view it as an artificial struggle (like a game) used to keep life dramatic enough to be interesting for everyone. some of us feel uncomfortably confined by the roles society forces us into, but most of us are not willing to opt out of having a role all together. gender roles are a form of flirting that has been ingrained into us (whether by biology or society or both) and a very commited form of flirting, so ingrained into us we don't break character until we die because in some ways it does define who we are in society and we are okay with others having a way to relate to us, but it doesn't really say anything about the actual contents or depth or our true selves and shouldn't really be viewed as such imo.

EDIT: also to make this perfectly clear when I said "better actors get first choice of what character they would like to play" im not talking about men forcing women into their role because that's their place what I meant by that is the more of a unique character you have (the more interesting you are ) the less need you have to confine yourself to particular role because people will be attracted to you uniqueness and character, but for the average person they would probably gain more acceptance with conforming to certain stereotypes to some extent because they simply aren't all that interesting any way. that applies to both men and women.
