Basically, imagine the sub as the dating market. With mods as women and men as the RP side, it starts as even but with the (explosion of online dating / ban of RP subs) this place is the only one where you can go.

Because (women standards are too high / mods fear admins) they start seeing their suitors more harshly, because the community is growing you can afford it. Because the ones who engage more are more likely to (get rejected / punished by subjective behavior) and this added with the fact that the (discussion / relationship) being a one-sided effort make them start to check out.

This result in only (players / low effort) members keep in the community and a massive decrease in the quality of the same.
