Just watched a panorama episode (for those that don’t know it’s a long term documentary series that runs in the uk for current topics) about rape in the uk.

I knew conviction rates were bad, I always thought about 3-5%. But the charge rate is only 3%, with convictions at 1%! That doesn’t even consider how few people actually report in the first place.

I’m absolutely shook how many rapists are just walking free, with absolutely no deterrent to re-offend.

The episodes covers the legal cases of a number of victims (both male and female), and how the cases develop and are handled. It’s really bad.

And yet on this subreddit I’m constantly seeing debates about false accusations and how men have to live in fear about them. Surly with stats this bad men have more chance of being raped themselves?! Why is this idea of false accusations so often seen as something men should be afraid of when they could literally do the crime and chances are not even get charged (let alone prosecuted).
