Further info from memory: it is in the interest of the state to ensure that partners of women who did NOT father children DO pay child support if the father can not be found because it means that there is less chance that the woman will need governmental support/the children enjoy financial support and thus don’t need governmental support.

Maybe a little more clarity: in Canada, you CAN be the father, legally, and be forced to pay child support even if the kid(s) AINT yours. How? The Canadian government doesn’t care about you only about the future tax-payer(s) aka that’s how governments make money.

How to AVOID it: if the chick comes to you saying that it’s your baby, or if it’s a friend/someone you know in need of help, DO NOT HELP THEM/WAIT TO SEE (OR CLAIM THE BABY) IF THE BABY IS YOURS. Otherwise to the law of courts you’re seen as a fatherly figure and you’re fucked. In the case they come to you and say that it’s your baby. DENY IT AND GET A LETTER IN WRITING AND NOTARIZED that YOU ARE NOT the father of said child of said person. With copies to the notary, yourself and them. Then wait 9months to get a DNA test, if it’s not yours, you get an angry woman but you’re safe, if it IS yours well, you’ll get an angry woman and you’re fucked. AGAIN, don’t do anything to support them otherwise, BAM, they see you acting in a fatherly/paternal role.

This is why you never put your name on the birth certificate if it isn’t yours or you will forever have to pay child support or go through a long legal battle of demanding paternity test & even then you may lose. My old friend had this exact situation & would have child support come out of his check because he tried not paying it & fighting it and they denied him, Upped instead knowing he wasn’t the father. He said they also berated him for trying to walk on the child’s life and not be a dead b/c she was 8-9 yrs old.
