The reality is a combination of factors — that women have less interest in practicing a video game for 16 hours a day, that they tend to not be quite as skilled on average... Or, if they are too be believed, all of that is bullshit and it’s actually because of le toxic meanie sexist gamers :( :(

Case in point: Starcraft brood war in South Korea. There were female progamers, but they generally played in their own leagues. There was one woman iirc — tossgirl — who played in the male leagues but never got too far. Teams like STX Soul did occasionally have one or two female pros on their teams iirc, but they didn’t generally play in pro league because frankly they were not good enough.

If you count mobile games, then both sexes play games about equally. However, which games they play vastly differs.

There's also research showing that men and women look for different things in video games, with men more geared towards competition and destruction, while women care more about the social aspects and story-driven experiences.

E-sports generally form around competitive games. On average, not only do women not play these genres of games as much (shooters mainly), they are also on average in general not as interested in competition. With these things in mind, it would actually be incredibly strange if women were 50% of e-sports competitors. That's also still ignoring the biological differences in reaction time favouring men, which is relevant at high level of play in shooters.

Pengu, a pro Siege player, acknowledged this and supports the claim. I have a female friend who I play Siege with and I get it. Dudes will go nuts if they think there is a girl in the lobby. She won't solo play most of the time because if it. It may seem like jibber jabber but as a gamer you can't deny that in some gaming groups, mostly FPS and fighting games, the men are super toxic.
