If you don’t love kids teaching ain’t for you. It ultimately doesn’t matter what you teach because no matter how much you might love the subject matter (history, science, etc.) that’s only maybe 20% of the job. The rest of the time is dealing with parents, administrators, other teachers, parents who are teachers and think they know better than you, and a slew of negative/annoying kid behaviors. A lot of teachers get burnt out within five years because they completely underestimate what this job is and what exactly they will be doing most of the time.

HR director here - I also hate recruiting and could never do it, have you thought about transitioning just to a different type of HR? That could be a much easier transition, wouldn’t require much schooling, and there are lots of different specialties that are very different than recruiting.

Well, it's worth considering the transition. If you have a bachelor's degree, you could substitute teach (which I'd recommend just to decide if you'd want to teach, regardless) to get into teaching through connections and pursue alternative certification. It's just a more direct path than the medical field. If you want to be a nurse, degree or no degree, you're looking at quite a bit of school. Do you have the option to just pursue school or would you need to work full time or half time? Are you taking out loans in this scenario? Because you'll want a plan to pay them off, such as public service loan forgiveness or potentially getting a scholarship from a hospital that will guarantee a job and pay your tuition. Would you be willing to consider the military? They'll pay for your school.

Second, I'd consider the life you want. What appeals to you about teaching? Is it the schedule, the fact that you'd have summers off and it's a good option for when you have children? If so, then nursing probably isn't the better option, because nurses can work long hours, especially if they want to move up. They do often have options for flexible scheduling though, such as three 12 hour days at a time. Does that appeal to you? Do you want to be able to take time away from the workforce? Returning would be easier with teaching, though certainly an option with nursing. Nursing will likely pay better and offers more opportunities for adventure, such as traveling nurse jobs.

Finally, consider the job itself. Only you can say if you like working with kids all day, but do you want to deal with their parents, too? Nursing, however, requires long hours on your feet. It can be really hard on the body, lifting patients and being on the go all the time. Would you like the high stress nature of nursing or prefer a different kind of stress with teaching? Do you enjoy caring for the sick or injured?

I’m in HR as well. It sounds like recruitment isn’t an option for you. Have you considered other areas of HR, such as training and development, compensation, or HR systems?

I’d look into shadowing or volunteer opportunities to get a realistic perspective of what these professions will be like. There’s a ton of different types of jobs with healthcare and education so you don’t necessarily need to just go to “nurse” or “teacher” to be in those fields.

The same things you are experiencing in HR is exactly what you will get in the education and medical field.

Most teachers are leaving education right now because they are having to act as the third parent for these kids. Parents aren't parenting anymore and putting all the onus on the public school. I don't recommend education at all for someone like you who doesn't have the bandwidth to do more than their job description.

On the other hand, nursing or any medical profession is not for the faint of heart either. It requires a genuine passion for caring and helping others while also being able to stomach the darkest parts of humanity. I have many female family members in the medical field (labor and delivery nurse, end-of-life care, etc.) and they all do not recommend their jobs to anyone unless you are emotionally strong and have the skillset to defend yourself constantly. Similar to HR, in the medical field you have to be on your p's and q's constantly. The majority of an average nursing shift is documenting your day to day duties to protect your ass so you don't lose your medical licensing. It sounds like you're exhausted from having to do that already in HR.

All in all, most fields are experiencing exactly what you are in HR. There isn't a single field that is exempt from doing more than their job description. It happens everywhere. Even in motherhood and wifehood.

Full text: Right now I’m in HR. I am working at a conservative company but I hate HR, I hate recruiting, I’m not a great recruiter, I’m in a tough career spot because I am expected to do the job of a manager and I don’t have the skills or bandwidth for it. So I’m done. I need to get out of this career, too legal for me. So I’ve been thinking about nursing or teaching. However, I’m scared to make the jump, and I don’t know what I’d teach or what kind of career field I would end up in. Help!
