It's one of the greatest selling books of all time. All women I talk to say it is stupid and badly written, and yet they've bought and read all three books+happily paid to go and see the movie. If I read a book and though it was badly written and sucked, I wouldn't buy and read the sequels and pay for a cinema ticket to watch the film adaptation. I'm sure most of you are the same. Trust their actions more than their words.

It's not very socially acceptable to say "I love this soft-porn movie about a golddigging bondage slut who turns herself in to a sex slave to get with a billionaire". It's socially acceptable to say "it is so awful, I only read it for the lawls"

If they didn't like it, it wouldn't have sold over 100 million copies, and the movie would not be such a financial success despite the reviews that completely destroy it.

I think the popularity of the story has everything to do with the traditional swept-away princess fantasy it portrays. A 1% alpha male billionaire becomes obsessed with a completely average college girl. Eventually the girl changes the man. They fall in love, get married and have children. The woman gains access to his fortune and cushy lifestyle he provides. She changes him and gets rid of his love of kinky and rough sex. The end. Nothing really different or revolutionary about it from what I can tell. It's a traditional gold-digger princess fantasy marketed as an erotic twilight for adults, to all the girls who grew up obsessed with Twilight. Herd mentality certainly helps sales but they wouldn't buy all the sequels+pay to see the movie if they didn't enjoy it.

this is the classical interpretation, and I agree with it, along with many progressive female debaters in the media. It's a female sexual fantasy/ femporn. I'm just proposing another possible interpretation, that doesn't necessarily exclude the dominant one, pun intended.

The romance novel genre has been a bestseller in places like Walmart and Target for a long time. 50 Shades is just a traditional romance novel marketed and packaged with very high quality IMO. I don't think there's really more to it than that, and it doesn't need to be overthought.

It doesn't seem to be particularly popular among women, relative to how vigorously it's been marketed to them. They went along with reading it because of their herd mentality (they were convinced that other women were reading it, so many of them followed suit), but it doesn't seem to have resonated with them much at all. I only ever hear them say how stupid it was.

well of course, they have to say that since NAWALT :)

not saying that you aren't right, but that may also be an explanation at least. And you can't get around those sales numbers. Or the psychology student's bar at my university, 70% female dominated study, who held a fifty shades of grey bar two months ago, advertising it as a place girls could come and be dominated, and where the dresscode for guys was suits (I realize it's just an anecdote).
