Everyone cool is bullshitting all the time.

A skilled power talker knows how to sell himself; a less confident guy with the same stories and achievements will come off like a desperate loser when he tries to drops them socially in a clearly obvious manner.

As a skilled power talker you ideally want to smoothly value proof through talking points and anecdotes while simultaneously not coming off like you're trying to value proof at all. It can be a tricky balance, but this balance is everything in the world of social interactions.

Lets take a look at three versions of the same story:

a) "I had a threesome once... two gorgeous brunettes, so fucking hot... but hey, thats just how I roll"

b) "I had a threesome once... two gorgeous brunettes, so fucking hot... WELL, until I was balls deep in one of them and I farted! It was fucking hilarious..."

c) "I had a threesome once... two gorgeous brunettes, so fucking hot... WELL, until I was balls deep in one of them and I started crying! It was fucking weird..."

We've all met guy (a); this guy sucks, and will either come off as being full of shit, even if he isn't, or so desperate to prove value that it negates any forward momentum that he is attempting to create by telling the story in the first place. He's getting eye rolls either way.

Guy (b) seems to be killing his story by embarrassing himself, but what he's really doing is creating credibility for his story and a sense of cocky confidence in himself... What he's doing is showing ass, or intentionally displaying a vulnerability- something not immediately cool that doesn't force the listener to come up with hidden motives that the storyteller may have for telling the story.

I chose "farting" deliberately as something that seems totally embarrassing, yet is something a confident guy can swing mentioning without breaking frame, and will likely get a laugh. It shows enough ass to create credibility in the base story ("Why the heck would anyone mention farting during a sex story?! It must be true!"), while providing a purpose for telling the story beyond proving value ("Guy (b) is so funny and crazy!").

How you choose to show ass can make or break your story, as evident with guy (c)... While his story is bizarre and hilarious, it has him showing too much ass and ruining the cool part (the "fucking two attractive girls at once" part),while consequently losing the respect of the person he's speaking with.

So, the easy formula for selling your bullshit/anecdote/real life achievement is: a) initial lie/story; "I had a threesome once!", b) additional cool detail; "two gorgeous brunettes, so fucking hot," c) showing ass for credibility; "but I farted."

This doesn't necessarily need to be done when the topic of conversation (ie: threesomes) isn't initially brought up by the storyteller. If someone else brings it up, less credibility is needed.

Establishing credibility like this also creates a long term effect with the person whom you're establishing credibility with, and will help provide credibility for future stories or conversations.
