I found especially with the word "ummmm..." is not actually because I am thinking of what to say, it's because I'm talking too much and I'm simply saying ummm because I want to think of something else to say without them interrupting me.

I found that if I just allow the conversation to go any which way, I eliminate saying umm and they enjoy the conversation more. Plus it puts me more out of my comfort zone and I have to think on my feet, makes it much more stimulating.

The "toss a marble in a metal bucket" trick works if you're practicing for a presentation with a friend. Basically, have someone make an annoying sound every time you use one of those empty filler words.
