A big mistake you are making, and something it took me WAY too many years to learn:

You are programming yourself to believe that you have to say something special or clever to be liked. If you continue to do that, you will inadvertently lower your self-esteem and increase your approach anxiety because you are sending your subconscious the message that you are not enough as you are.

So my advice is to open the next batch of girls you run across by saying the first thing that comes to mind about the weather. Actually do this exercise, don't just imagine it; the action and response is necessary to reprogram your emotional brain that it's okay to NOT TRY HARD when you talk to women. Even "straight up retarded" openers work if your vibe is relaxed and you show no shame about your awkwardness.

Of course, if you do spontaneously think of something clever to say, it's okay to say it. The paradox is that you will find yourself thinking of many more clever things to say AFTER you teach your hindbrain that it isn't necessary to say anything clever. If you don't teach your hindbrain that, you will struggle with this forever (as I did).

A few other comments. First, openers are just to get the girl's attention; she'll be so busy reorienting her attention that it probably won't matter what you say (as long as it's not weird). Second, your nonverbals are way more important than your words, so take that energy you've been wasting on "What do I say?" and apply it instead to bringing a relaxed, masculine, slow-talking, centered-in-your-lower-body vibe to the opener. Third, if you're thinking too hard about what to say, she'll see it in your facial muscle tension and she won't like it.

But these are secondary to my main point, which is that it is vitally important to teach your limbic brain that you don't have to be clever or try hard to open girls, and the only way to do that is to open some girls without being clever and see how it works out.

Weather would have been a decent starting point as long as you could have linked it to another topic.

You kind of missed your chance. You set your anchor down as soon as you had this mindset of "I can't talk to her about the..." You can talk about anything you like. Swallow that AA and just start talking. That zero percent chance of her seeing you again is more of a reason to NGAF.

I just got done reading Day Bang. I'll try to paraphrase something that I learned from it. As long as you can link your lame "cliche" conversation in to something about you as "bait" you can continue the conversation in the direction you want. For example, "It looks like it's going to rain today" Smile, eye contact, wait for response. Once the conversation continues, you could say something like "This weather reminds me of when I lived in New York." This is a really short version of how this could go down but you get the idea.

Situational observations that will make her laugh. In that scenario, I would have framed her as stalking me.
