Two examples, the girl in the OP, who says:

To be completely honest I didn't get to this number by just picking guys up at bars or whatever. There may be something wrong with my brain... I trust people too easily. I want a relationship and I try not to judge men, so I believe them when they say they aren't just trying to "hit it and quit it". Turns out it is exactly what they do. Have sex with me for a couple of weeks and leave just like they said they wouldn't. Me, not wanting to give up on love, finds another guy and the same thing happens.

And then a subsequent commentator:

My number is low and I wish it was 0 because of who it was. I felt like I built it up and it was still shit. (Just some perspective, I guess)

Obviously both of these women made decisions that they now regret (though the first one seems less likely to be genuine in that regret, but I'll hear what you guys have to say).

However, how can one assess and know whether or not the regret comes purely from attempting to engage the hamster and rationalize away the shame that they feel that they're expected to have, or whether it comes from genuine remorse in the wake of past bad decisions and poor impulse control?

Any purported methods of general application wouldn't go astray either.
