My role in the weekly grocery shop is to push the trolley, grab some condoms and choose what meats we get that week. Since my LTR does almost all the cooking, there is little point in me doing much else. We wrap up this week’s shop and join the queue at the checkout. There is a single girl in front of us with a small amount of food on the conveyor. She is about a 7, is wearing her gym gear and has just put a reusable grocery bag on the conveyor to buy as she must have forgotten to bring her own (save the environment and all that). Without thinking I say, “Did you just want to take one of our bags? We have heaps and plenty more at home”. A lot of smiling, ‘thank yous’ and ‘no problems’ later, her items are being scanned and my LTR and I are patiently waiting.

After the 7's groceries are all done, packed in 2 bags (she actually had one of her own), she checks her phone and then tells the attendant, “Can you hold these and I will be right back?” She then walks outside, her stuff is put to the side and, as our stuff is being scanned, I notice her talking on her phone and walking off toward the car park.

We pay for our stuff, walk to my car and unload the bags. As I am taking the trolley back, I see her walking back into the supermarket. I get in the car and start driving home. Here is an abridged conversation with my LTR…

“You know, I was thinking about paying for that girl’s stuff on top of ours just so that she would get a great surprise when she came back in”
“Are you serious?”
“Yeah, that would have totally made her week. My old man used to do that with fuel if he saw someone finishing up pumping as he was paying. We would then laugh as we were driving off watching the attendant try and explain to the person their fuel was paid for”
“I'm not going to spend my money on someone else I don’t even know, I'm trying to save for a house deposit”
“So am I, but I can afford it, it would have probably been $40”
(we are both on very good salaries)
“You don’t even know if she needs it”
“Who cares if she’s a millionaire, it’s just a nice thing to do. The only reason I didn't do it is because there was no guarantee that she was coming back. If she left some security, like her licence, with the attendant I would have definitely done it.”
commence hamstering
“I can see how that is a really nice thing to do, and I guess you’re a better person than me but I still wouldn't do it”
lol what?; I work in law and she is a manager at an NGO
“That’s fine, I wasn't going to use your money, and it was my decision. Everyone is so hostile these days and always looking out for themselves”
“I know we need to do good things to others to make the world a better place but I don’t see why you would want to help her out”
Note: she also gives a lot to charity
“Just to make her week”
“I still don’t think you should have done it”

She could never admit it was because it was a hot girl so I just kept on asking things like, ‘why wouldn’t you just do a random act of kindness, it’s totally something you would do’
‘Yeah, but…’

I was fascinated by the mental gymnastics my LTR was willing to do in order to get around the fact that she herself is a caring and giving person. Just because I gave this girl a bag, smiled at her and suggested I pay for her groceries, my LTR went into lock down about being nice to 'any' human. She couldn't admit the truth and ended up trying to convince herself that I was a more generous person in general.

Oh and I gave a homeless guy $1 on the way back to my car. No issue there apparently.

TL;DR Was nice to a hot girl in front of my LTR, suggested being even nicer. LTR became a different person for obvious reasons she wouldn't admit.
