He has an outdoor wood-fueled hot tub... I'm willing to bet he's got some sort of water source on that property whether it's a well or a lake or something. You don't just move out into the boonies without worrying about the 3 basic necessities...Water, Food and Shelter in that particular order. Mostly because people can generally survive 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food.

Live in Saskatchewan in the winter and that wont seem so strange. Minus 40C will kill a guy in less than an hour pretty easily.

Esp when SaskPower is fucked for a day or two and the furnace can't run. Protip keep a generator or a pellet stove handy (can burn grain).

Pretty sure shelter is because of it's morale boosting effects. If you have some place you can get out of the rain, sun, whatever. Shelter is also probably the easiest thing to find or make since all you need is some little lean-to to get you out of rain and/or harsh sun. After that it's all about the upgrades you make to make yourself more comfortable.

You build the shelter while you still have the ability to do so. Waiting until your dying of thirst or starvation with low energy is not going to make building a shelter easy.

Shelter helps conserve existing fat/water resources.
Surviving 3 weeks without food is only possible if you can keep yourself warm at night, you will burn through calories much faster without shelter. There is also always the possibility of rain. If you have to spend the nights soaked, hypothermia can kill you faster than dehydration.
As for the 3 hours listed by the Army, that probably has more to do with not being seen and shot at.

where I live when it snows you'll be lucky to last 60 minutes. You might not be dead at 1 hour but you might be so damaged from frostbite that death will come soon because your extremities are already forfeit.
