A small percentage of people have a strong Saviour complex. Compulsively trying to "rescue" the downtrodden and the botched, this is how their psyche is set up. If they're doing it, they get endorphin kicks from feeling like "a good person". Their apparently unselfish acts have selfish, unpleasant motivations standing behind them.

Add the attention grabbing and martyrdom pose opportunities for a woman doing this, and you have yourself a real life "unicorn".
