http://www.huffingtonpost.com/marcus-buckingham/whats-happening-to-womens_b_289511.html[1]

Each year since 1972, the United States General Social Survey has asked men and women: "How happy are you, on a scale of 1 to 3, with 3 being very happy, and 1 being not too happy?" This survey includes a representative sample of men and women of all ages, education levels, income levels, and marital status--1,500 per year for a total of almost 50,000 individuals thus far--and so it gives us a most reliable picture of what's happened to men's and women's happiness over the last few decades. As you can imagine, a survey this massive generates a multitude of findings, (see the full report by Wharton Professors Betsy Stevenson and Justin Wolfers) but here are the two most important discoveries. First, since 1972, women's overall level of happiness has dropped, both relative to where they were forty years ago, and relative to men. You find this drop in happiness in women regardless of whether they have kids, how many kids they have, how much money they make, how healthy they are, what job they hold, whether they are married, single or divorced, how old they are, or what race they are. (The one and only exception: African-American women are now slightly happier than they were back in 1972, although they remain less happy than African American men.)

Science at its best. As feminism has risen over the past 4 decades, female happiness has dropped.

Correlation = causation?

[–]soapjackal7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks. The most important question to answer yourself when viewing any statistic is this one.

[–]lordofthejelly 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You are correct, there is a correlation but as yet there is not a direct causal link between the two that I'm aware of.

However, it can be said pretty definitively that on a macro level feminism is failing those that it claims to help. Feminism is a movement for the advancement of women. If this movement for the advancement of women were succeeding, women would getting happier, and they're not.

Whether feminism has caused that decline in happiness or simply been unable to reverse it is irrelevant. Either way, it's failing the very people that it claims to help.

[–]thinkthric 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

OP's linked article theorizes on causation:

On a biological level, Humans are survival and replication machines. Our brain rewards us with positive emotions when it perceives our actions as adaptive; otherwise, it punishes us with pain.

The modern American woman is placed in a double-bind that guarantees she will be susceptible to depression in her middle age. She can either follow the feminist ‘Empowerment’ script, and spend her childbearing years focused on her career and a series of casual relationships, or she can pursue motherhood.

That isn't necessarily true. If there's some other reason why women's happiness would decrease at a faster rate than "feminism" was increasing women's happiness, "feminism" could still be serving its objective even while we see a general trend of women's happiness falling.

That is, could feminism be softening the blow in the decrease in women's happiness? There's really no reason to believe it has or hasn't, as this is just a correlation, like you've stated. I see this fact cited all the time, and there's always a really big speculation as to why women are not as happy, but there is basically nothing definitive to say that it is causal.

I suppose it comes down to the definition of success. In my mind, simply slowing down a downward trend doesn't qualify as success when that's all they've done for the past 4 decades. Success comes if and when the trend starts to get reversed.

Can you think of any variable that would jointly cause both feminism and a decline in female happiness?

[–]riptaway0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That is not proof of causation

[–]iseeyou13120 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If we can reliably affirm that two variables are correlated, this means one of the following:

  • A causes B.
  • B causes A.
  • A and B are jointly caused.
  • Another variable causes both A and B.

If we can eliminate them both being dependent on an external factor, then yes, correlation is causation.

This is because no matter whether or not women admit it, they need us. The more they push us away the less happy they are. We'll be fine. They'll just get more unhappy.

[–]lordofthejelly 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In the article I referenced above, you'll see that that is exactly what is happening. Since 1972, women have been getting progressively less happy, while men have become more happy

This was an excellent article. Too bad hardcore feminists will simply fight it

Thankfully we have a super effective class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Just take one daily and shut the fuck up already.

AND LET ME READ MY LIST OF ANTI-DEP REVIEWS!

[–]Senior Contributorveggie_girl0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sleep deprivation is the number 1 cause of depression and mental illness in women and men. Other factors pale in comparison but are mostly thought to be related to diet and exercise.

The average American is getting less and less sleep than ever before in history. Last I read the current average is about 6 hours a night but our body generally needs 8. Its not a wonder everyone is fat and depressed here, it all stems from insufficient sleep.

I'm sure feminism doesn't help, but whatever effect it is having on mental health is too minor to consider. We have a bigger problem to deal with.

Now if you want to remove depression from the discussion and instead focus on women's overall feeling of happiness and fulfillment, yes feminism is an inhibitor.

This is pseudo science bullshit.

Oh of course depression is caused by being beta or out of your social element! How convenient for the red pill world. Of course, that does not jive with even the most cursory arm chair observations. Tell me why so many leaders and high powered individuals throughout history have been prone to depression?

This is an article about someone who got overly excited by an idea they had and is arrogant enough to shove it out there like it has some backing. People have been trying to explain away depression as a philosophical issue for ever. It is not. It never was nor will it be. And suggesting that depression is their fault--that it is their mistaken choice that makes them this way--is so harmful to their healing process that I know this was vetted by no one who has taken the real, neccessary, adult steps to handle their depression.
