Bear with me here - I know we frown on social media a lot but I'm going to encourage people to think about something which helped me figure out where I wanted to focus my time. I found the goal setting process to be extremely difficult because I really wasn't sure what I wanted to do. This helped me, I hope it will help you.

Whether it's Tinder or Instagram, people are given a short amount of space with which to describe themselves. We all know that 90% of the information that goes here is either completely fabricated or full of useless quotes like "Live, Laugh, Love" (looking at you, ladies). I find the most useful descriptions to be the ones that list 3 or 4 things that describe the person. So that's exactly what we're going to do.

Step 1: What 3 or 4 things describe you right now? When I started it would have been something like "weekend warrior, loyal employee, Call of Duty extraordinaire".

Step 2: What 3 or 4 things would you want that to say a year from now? 5 years from now? Obviously something like 'Fighter Pilot' might not be realistic at this point, but you'll find that most of what you WISH would describe you actually still can. If I had a choice, mine would read 'Entrepreneur, Healthy Cook, Reclaimed Woodworker, Amateur Mixed Martial Artist'. Badass right? Well now you know where I'm focusing my time and energy.

Instead of thinking about some huge "Goal" (capital G, because a lot of times it seems like there's pressure associated with it), think about a word you'd like to add to your self description. Writer, Gardner, Weekend bartender, volunteer fireman... the list is endless. Once you think about a few things you think would be cool to do, your goals can help smooth themselves out.
