Unless his poor job performance is affecting your job performance, why do you need to do anything about it?

Keep him as an "after-hours" friend, but be professional on the job.

It doesn't sound like your friend is doing anything bad to you so I don't think you have any need to cut him out of your life. I guess all I can really say is to take caution. As you succeed and leave him in the dust and your presence continually reminds him of what he could've had and could've done but didn't, he may envy you and that envy may lead to him sabotaging you behind the scenes but even then, this is just baseless paranoia. It seems that as you progress, he may gradually phase out of your life anyway in which case, you'll probably need to seek out new friends.

Best course of action: Keep on truckin'

Poor guy doesn't have the same drive to succeed that you do. You could try and raly him, but this may not be his thing. I'm sure that he is embarrassed by his lack of success.

If he builds you up in other areas keep him on board. If he is a drain on your life and brings you down kick him to the curb.
