People say westerners (yes, that includes American born people with Asian heritage) do "well" in East Asia because they conflate the bar girls fawning over them with doing well. What's actually happened is that you are seen as a rich American (whether or not you actually are is another story), and the people you find in these bars want to take advantage of that.

You know that guy you see in the night clubs with his own private table and obscene champagne with hot women all around him that appears outwardly to be doing well when really he is bleeding himself dry emotionally, financially, and in extreme cases physically? That's you when you step into a bar geared for foreigners in China or Thailand or wherever.

You don't want to be that guy.

Depends on the country. If you're talking about Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Phillipines or China then no. Korea seems to be the only exception that comes to mind.

Game approach is very different in each respective country. Cultural norms and so on.

Many of us are Asians living abroad. I'm a Japanese American and I live in America. /u/SwoleSeoulBro is also a Korean American in Seoul.

To answer your question: it's not necessary, but it's incredibly useful. Despite what you may have heard, most Asian chicks prefer to date their countrymen, all other factors besides race being equal. However, there is a significant portion of the population who want to date foreigners. These are the girls who speak English and hang out at foreigner bars/clubs/parties. If you don't speak the native language, your pool of available girls will have a higher percentage of waegook chasers.

As an Asian-American in Asia, you really can have the best of both worlds if you can also speak the language. Chicks won't be opposed to going out with you because you (hopefully) understand their culture and their parents won't balk when they say they're going out with an American ("But don't worry, he's Korean American.") You're exotic, yet familiar.

Most AA or European Asians complain as fuck in the SoSuave forums all the fucking time. Most say that it is insanely difficult to hit on any chick. Beucase white chicks see them as asians, and asian chicks see them as whites/unpure (Koreans are big on this one).
