I've learned this the hard way.

Next time I go out with a girl, I pick the place and make all the decisions. I'm not even going to ask her what she wants. It's always "you pick" anyway and I just lose ground.

Absolutely true, but you also need to use your intelligence on this one. The point isn't to bark orders at your SO, or try to make all the decisions for her. You're not leading her around like a pony. You're not trying to micromanage her. The message here can go from alpha to beta if implemented wrong (which is why you need to hone your game before getting into a relationship). Yes, you can be "too controlling", which means that you care too much about her following your lead, or doing what you want her to do.

Instead, what this is really about is assertion and taking the initiative. You need to be a guy who has plans and options, who can make his own decisions, and who enjoys what he does. Order her what she likes, because you know that it's what she likes, rather than waiting for her to make up her mind.

Women don't like making decisions. They just don't. They give into impulses, but would rather starve like Buridan's Ass if they have to stop and decide something, when they don't already have strong feelings either way. Women are used to running on emotion, impulse, and passion. When none of these are involved, they become very uncomfortable doing anything.

There are downsides to being men in this equation. Lots of times we forget how to run on passion, or we forget that we have emotions. But if it isn't already repressed by society (a good definition of beta,if any), we like to take charge and command. You need to become comfortable even with making decisions without any hint of a justification. "Because I said so" is often better than no decision at all. Project strength, and people will obey. Go for it.
