We need more women in X

Translation: We need to lower salaries in X by increasing the number of people in the field.

Businesses don't want more women in STEM fields because of gender equality or some other idealistic nonsense. They want more women because they are a relatively untapped source of labor. More qualified applicants for a position means less negotiation leverage for workers, and businesses can pay people less to do the same work.

The whole scheme is so transparent I saw through it even before taking the red pill.

The talent in IT is guys who have an interest and have been dedicated with technology since they were young.

What girl do you see that prefers a night of writing code to riding dick?

This isn't the fault of schools. There's a few girls that try out IT programs all the time, and then immediately drop out when they realize that writing status updates to facebook isn't the same as debugging shitty code.

I once dated a ballet dancer for a year that claimed to want to learn how to code. She was an "avid reader" and even used Firefox, which had me pretty excited.

I gave her a copy of this book.

To her credit, she read the first chapter.

Then (despite my genuine encouragement), she went back to reading Harry Potter fan fiction.

I kept gently pushing her to read and got blown off Every. Single. Time.

And here's the best part: her mother was working on a Ph.D. in Women's Studies at the time and is a "very smart cookie," according to her daughter.

I don't think her sunny disposition and positive thinking will take her very far in life.

Strictly speaking when women are under-represented in some fields... This means they are OVER-represented in other fields. Lets see the demands for gender equality in teaching and HR which are usually stocked full of women. I would include nurses in this but lately I've noticed a larger number of men taking on those types of jobs (I personally know about 4-5 male nurses among the friends I play video games with)

Our technocracy is detached from competence. It's not the technocracy of engineers, but of "thinkers" who read Malcolm Gladwell and Thomas Friedman and watch TED talks and savor the flavor of competence, without ever imbibing its substance.

These are the people who love Freakonomics, who enjoy all sorts of mental puzzles, who like to see an idea turned on its head, but who couldn't fix a toaster.

... Competence is the real modernity and it has very little to do with the empty trappings of design that surround it. In some ways the America of a few generations ago was a far more modern place because it was a more competent place. For all our nice toys, we look like primitive savages compared to men who could build skyscrapers and fleets within a year... and build them well.

... Our modernity is style rather than substance. It's Obama grinning. It's the right font. It's the right joke. It's that sense that X knows what he's doing because he presents it the right way. There's nothing particularly modern about that. In most cultures, the illusion of competence trumps the real thing. It's why so many countries are so badly broken because they go by appearances, rather than by results.
