Fast-forward to now. China controls much of Africa. It has several outright colonies and countries ruled as protectorates. One of these countries is Zimbabwe, which, once the breadbasket of Africa, is teetering on the brink of mass starvation. And so Mugabe begged the white Rhodesians to come back. Please, he said, he would give them reparations for their farms. He would give them their land back. He would rein in his militants. Please, he said, come back to Zimbabwe, or else we’re gonna have to become a Chinese protectorate to survive.

And the white farmers looked across the borders, waved the Chinese flag, and said “go fuck yourself; enjoy the Chinese”. And suddenly, it all made sense. China had funded ZANU to displace the white middle class into her own colonies, and now can grab up all of Zimbabwe’s resources for scraps.
