tl;dr: Do not become weak and humble, but don't become a douchebag by taking what you want. Always understand the difference and make it a second nature to never go into the other territory. Ignore anyone who tries to bring you down, they only want to feel superior to you.

Have you noticed how the audience always roots for the underdog?
Have you noticed how the weaker more fragile thing is almost always considered the victim?
Fact is, everyone in the WORLD wants to be superior to one another. We all want to feel superior to someone, and those who don't feel superior to anyone is because they suffer from anxiety and/or depression. That's not what this is about.
To feel superior to someone, you have to feel that they are less threatening than you. Here's an example:
Situation A) A guy is standing around in the train while it's traveling, and a seat clears up next to him. He's been on the train the longest, but he offers the seat to a cute girl that was also eyeing the spot, but arrived later on the train.
Situation B) A guy is standing around in the train like previously, but this time he takes the spot for himself without hesitation. He sees the girl who looks a little bit bitter that he didn't give the spot to her, and then laughs about it.
Situation C) A guy is standing around in a train like previously, but this time he takes the spot for himself, and the seat next to him which this time also cleared up, to put his feet up. People look at him nastily, because the train is full of people standing around. Somebody speaks up, but he looks at them angrily and aggresively. The guy who spoke up backs down because he doesn't want a confrontation, and nobody else speaks up either.
In situation A, the guy is being the typical nice guy. He's not being threatening at all, in fact he's being weak. He is therefore likeable (dont' like you probably like the idea of somebody like that), because he is weak. There is literally no other reason to like that guy, even though it can be agreed that he's likeable, other than the fact that he gave up something from himself for a stranger. This isn't being selfless, this is being stupid. In the animal kingdom, a leader never gives something up for himself. The lion pack leader will even get his lionesses to hunt FOR him. Keep this in mind.
Let's skip B for a second.
In situation C, the guy is obviously being a dick, but does he have a proper strong mentality? No. He is showing others that he is not only unattractive, but a bad person to be around because he will take advantage of others and his situation. People dislike him not because they feel inferior to him, but because he is a negativity in the environment. This is essentially like the bad-egg, the judas, or the murderer, if you will. Back to situation B, it comes down to this that I want to really say something about. People, espicially the girl, may not like you because you held your own, and even went a step beyond by laughing at the girl, but you did what you should naturally do. You waited the longest, and naturally, you should take the seat. There is nothing more to it.
There will ALWAYS be people who will dislike you for this, because in this case, they will be the people in situation A, the people who give up their seat for whoever they get intidimated by or out of a habit of thinking meekly. Does the fact that people don't like you show that you are not valid in your mindset? No, it in fact validates it. If people don't like you, you are doing something right. It's similar to the saying "he who tries to please all makes no friends, he who isn't afraid of making enemies, makes the most friends".
Don't let other people try to bring you down and feel superior to you. Stand your ground, and remain cocky if you need to. It doesn't make a difference what they think at the end of the day, if you are what you need to be.
