One of my recent plates has elevated herself to near-gf status. I occasionally drop other girls to see her instead and I'm finding myself really liking her for long-term relationship material. I found myself saying more romantic and lovey things... in text I can just delete them if I notice in time, but in real life sometimes the comments just slipped out (and it's nice to say a few nice things in between the regular teasing). Then I found the phrase "Or whatever." It turned all my beta-statements into relaxed non-chalance, when said with the right tone:

We should go out for a candlelit dinner sometime, or whatever.

I didn't want to be rough tonight, I just felt like feeling your soft skin, or whatever.

You deserved it that compliment, or whatever.

It shows off the vulnerability that she wants to see and then pulls it away. Ultimately I'll just stop saying those things together and pull the frame back my way but it's not always that easy to do it, instead of just saying it. As it is, that phrase saves me every time I say something stupid and sappy that would make her lose interest in me otherwise.

tl;dr add "or whatever." to any beta phrase and you've got a good chance of recovering!
