If you are a Jonathan Kent (beta) shouldn't you look to raise a son of Jor-El (alpha) who will call you father and espouse your values. Is that not the most pragmatic choice?

.....no. Absolutely not. Raising a kid is such a huge drain on time, energy and resources that i would never consider rraising someone'e else son unless i was sterile or something (probably not even that).
But i can tell you this: if i did, i would be horrified by any attempt on my stepson's part to diminish my importance, and raise that of his biodaddy. Any complaint, even made in his ormonal teenager phase,that "i am not his father" would probably break my heart. Any attempt on his part to develop a relationship with his biodaddy would just make me resentful. Maybe someone else would be able to manage those situations, and i say, good for them. But my standards are those of a human being, not of a saint, and if i "slave away" at parenting, rightfully considered the worst full time job in the world, the idea of being discarded in any way after a kid's lifetime of caring for him and paying his bills would be terryfing for me, and fill me with shame of having completely fucked up my life in exchange of a "you are a chump" trophy.

How do you feel adoption beyond simply a last resort when you and your partner can't have kids of your own?

Adoption is different because the situation is symmetrical: both you and your partner decide that you choose to have a kid.

If you take on a single mother, the kid is the prize you have to pay to be with her. If you go for (for whatever reason) artificial insemination, it's somewhat different, but the kid is still hers and she can still handpick the dad, which doesn't make it much better.

And if you're particularly unlucky, you don't get superman as an adoptive son, but a primarch of one of the traitor legions.

In reality though, there are no superhuman beings, just kids of better or worse genetic stock. Why again should a man voluntarily play the caretaker for one of the former if he can have those who are his own?

My first wife had 2 prior kids i was supposed to raise. Did last only 2 years. Do NEVER marry a woman with kids, EVER. It will ruin you emotionally and financially.

My second wife had one prior kid. I told her i would not marry because of this. Finally she did give it to adoption. We marry, have 4 kids together. Best decision ever. This was 20 years ago.

If I have the resources to, the child's father was a high value friend/acquaintance/relative that died AND the mother is a woman I know for years and love (not necessarily the passionate kind of love, definitely not the needy kind either) then sure. I'd rather get the kid under my wing than have it deal with single motherhood or men that just wanna bang its mom and couldn't care less for the child.

That would all depend on what you want and find fulfilling, wouldn't it?

I used to work in a residential treatment center for troubled teens, most of whom had been adopted, in the foster system, or otherwise under state care prior to their arrival at our facility. Choosing to adopt may be noble and perhaps fulfilling for some, but it's also going to be a minefield of emotional issues often just by virtue of the absence of the biological parents in the equation.

Raising another man's child as your own by marrying a single mother is probably slightly less problematic than adoption, but it's not going to some sort of insta-family fantasy either. After watching my own father go through that in his short lived second marriage I wouldn't wanna sign up for it.

My father and his older brother and sister were raised by a stepfather as well and grew up kind of resenting their younger half-brother for what they viewed as preferential treatment from my grandpa. As adults they all have a good relationship and my grandfather has definitely had a fulfilling family life. Individual results may vary.

I have a kid. Dealing with someone elses kid is entirely different from dealing with your own and I find it very frustrating to be honest. I can't do it. If would have never been a father and experienced years of caring for and raising a child I would probably be prone to considering it. But once you have your own, you realize that the bond between you two isn't there...it takes time to establish and your authority's never natural law, it's only granted by the mother.

Some. But I'm about reality. My kid has my features, that is half me. You can't fake that.
I suppose. But I am not a Kent. I'm more of a Deathstroke. If I found out a kid wasn't mine I am not gonna pretend. I'd leave the mom. If she had a kid prior to me, we can be cool and I can be a father figure. But I am not his father. I'd urge him to seek the guy out.

Things get stupid when you let your emotions rule you. The only time it is advisable to raise another's child is if you cannot have kids of your own. And even then, you would do better adopting an orphan than raising some snot nose who is probably spoiled by his single mom anyways. Q

There are some cases were adoption is acceptable. Infertility of the man is one, if the woman is infertile, have children with another woman. Another case is when you already have plenty of children of your own and do it out of love and kindness for the child. This cannot be a child of the woman.

Everything else is cuckoldry. That doesn't mean it is the children's fault, they had no say in it, even Jesus was a product of cuckoldry.
