I don't have any literature recommendations (would like to see one or two myself), but I'll try to offer some tips on what I've learned so far from being a dad.

1) I work on stimulating his mind at every opportunity. From what I've seen, his mother is in the habit of leaving the TV on so he can watch Paw Patrol and Spongebob all day (Nickelodeon is horrible with these re-run marathons) while she texts her new boyfriend, so I try to counter that with coloring, building with his Mega Blocks, reading and reciting longer/more complicated phrases. In a month or two, we've been graduating to 4 and 5 syllable sentences such as "Bella (dog) is cute", "Trains go choo choo" and "I want chocolate milk". His gibberish is still mostly indecipherable, so we're working on coherence and consistency. He already knows his full alphabet and writing it out is in progress. Can also count to 34 now, which makes me proud. Knowledge, creativity, owning his accomplishments.

2) I discipline him not to push my buttons and when to reel in his temper. This boy has a short fuse like I did when I was a child, so it seemingly doesn't take much to make him fussy (especially when he hasn't had a nap). And I'll be damned if he turns into one of those uncontrollable little shits that stomp around grocery stores kicking display end caps while their mothers just sigh and pretend it didn't happen. It usually starts with my making so many wrong guesses as to what he's asking for in gibberish. But when he whips out the whining and fake crying, I sternly tell him to stop and calm down. He knows his temper doesn't fly with me, but I still need to come down on him for it every now and then. Self-discipline as early as I can possibly teach him.

3) Being social. I'm lucky to have enough relatives and friends of family that I always have someone to watch him when both his mother and I are working, so I never have to pay for day care. However, that's resulted in the only socializing he gets is with the same family members (all of which are at least 9 years old) who babysit him, so he's very shy around new people. Every week or so, I bring him to a public park and watch him play on the jungle gym and swings. Sometimes other kids are there, others the place is empty. It's a very nice park, so even when luck of the draw isn't in our favor, we're at least getting out of the house for fresh air and exercise. A coworker mentioned to me that we should make a playdate so my boy and her (very extroverted) daughter can socialize and have some fun; really need to take her and her husband up on that soon.

Oh, and talk to your kids like they're adults. Cut out any and all baby talk in favor of banter and semi-serious conversation, even if it's one-sided. Ask them questions to evoke responses from them, making them feel engaged & included in the conversation. Just save the philosophical, political and religious debates for when they're a little older.

So this is how I'm approaching things with my son.

The Dangerous Book for Boys - This book along with a couple of others to give us stuff to do that has purpose. Most of it is pretty straightforward but its a means to an end. We are doing fun stuff together and spending quality time. Plus they do have some basic life skill lessons for him to pick up. Gives him a sense of accomplishment.
Boy Scouts of America - He's not old enough yet but this is another one of those books I'll give him so he can find real world skills to play at and master.
As to the actually parenting style books that I think you are asking about. Haven't found those per se. I don't know if they even exist. What I've done is tried to figure out what kind of man I want my son to be and then emulated that myself. I want him to be calm and even tempered. That means I don't fly off the handle. I don't want him to whine so I don't give in when he whines. I want him to ask questions so I make him explain what he thinks I'm doing when we do something together. Etc, etc, etc... Look to yourself and model the behavior you want him to have. That'll lay the groundwork.
