TheRedArchive exists so that this writing cannot quietly disappear. Deleted accounts, banned subreddits, blogs long since offline — much of what is archived here survives nowhere else.

Preserving it is not free. The servers, the storage and the bandwidth come out of my own pocket, and the bill grows every month the archive does.

If you believe this record should still be here for whoever comes looking in twenty years, you can help keep it online.

I like your post, hits on some good stuff, that said.

A few questions, what is 'fun', and at what level does it intersect with socially unacceptable behavior to which another human being will find it amusing, or arousing.

I would guess that socially unacceptable behavior is normally regarded as repulsive, while 'fun' behavior is regarded with more acceptance, so how do these more or less... mutually exclusive behaviors intersect, if at all? I'd assume it being a very fine line, one that requires more specific sensory data. Is there a way you could operationalize this behavior, or is this yet another one of the cases where the behavior in question must be understood at a intuitive level?

I would expect that kind of question from a guy named Spock.

Basically, if you're having fun and not trying to degrade someone, you can say and do almost anything and it will be considered cute. Hell, even if you ARE being degrading, that can be considered hot if you carry yourself properly and look decent

Fun and humour are largely about surprise. Doing or saying unexpected things. Whatever you're expected to do, you don't do. You're expected to tell the truth - so instead you lie, exaggerate, make stuff up. You're expected to follow the standard social rules - so instead you break them, do outrageous things. You're expected to live in the real world - so instead you role-play, make up imaginary stuff, pretend to be someone you're not. Etc. There are a million different ways to not do the expected thing.

Being an attractive man is largely about being high-status. High-status people can get away with stuff normal people can't - being selfish, narcissistic, mean, etc. High-status people tend to be in positions of authority - teacher/student, big-brother/bratty-little-sister, rock-star/groupie, etc. Again, there are a million different ways of conveying high status.

So being fun in an attractive way is about doing or saying unexpected high-status things. Saying unexpectedly narcissistic things, doing role-play where you're in a high-status role relative to her, etc.

But like you said, there's usually a reason why breaking a social rule isn't normally acceptable. If you do something that's too selfish, too mean, that's going to outweigh the humour and the high-status-signal.

A 2-foot-long straw is unexpected (and therefore funny) all by itself. And stealing a girl's drink is both unexpected (it breaks a social rule that most people follow most of the time) and high-status (it's selfish, the kind of thing that only a high-status person can get away with). And because you're only stealing a little bit of her drink (you're just sipping it through a straw, it's not like you slurped up her entire drink - though I imagine you could get away with that if you've got the balls to stay unfazed when she attacks you for it), the unacceptableness of having her drink stolen is outweighed by the humour and the attraction.

For more examples, see David DeAngelo's "cocky/funny" stuff, etc.

Anyway, that's how I'd explain it to Mr. Spock. :)
