Ask a room full of average people what feminism's greatest victory is and you'll get largely the same answers. Women's suffrage, female employment, lower domestic violence etc.
Ask a room full of skeptics and the answers will be different. The feminised school and university system, the breakup of the nuclear family, biased family court system and general demonization of the male gender.
As an RP man I think one victory stands head and shoulders above all these things:
Feminism has won the war over language.
Over time the small changes, dilution of meaning and even wholesale repurposing of words has allowed feminists to completely control their narrative. Thereby altering the mainstreams ideas over time. I'd argue the feminist language machine is essentially the foundation upon which most of modern feminism sits.
Here are three quick examples:
The very origins of the movement were the opening shots in the war for language. The "Fem" in feminism means it is an inherently gendered word that is expressly female. Yet the average person or feminist would say it is the pursuit of equality. The Oxford Dictionary definition is slightly better as it explicitly mentions its focus upon women but still ignores equality issue. In reality the movement is concentrated solely on the female side of the equation often to the detriment of men. The gendered movement has a gendered name as it correctly should, yet the mainstream view would happily dispute this. A great example is that I am personally opposed to modern feminism. However the modern feminist definition would label me a feminist due to my belief that women deserve equal rights and opportunities.
A personal favourite of mine is misogyny. The Oxford Dictionary definition of misogyny is: "Dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women." Instead we see the word bandied about as a cheap discussion ender against any perceived criticism of a woman; regardless of it having anything to do with gender. A perfect and recent example of this is the #gamergate fiasco and the responses of its detractors.
Rape and harassment are two words that under feminism's watch have had their meanings progessively widened. The contemporary meaning of rape used to be the event where intercourse was had explicitly against a females will, absence of the ability to consent (e.g. actually blacked out drunk, or asleep etc.) or under duress. Now it effectively means any time where a woman has had a drink or two (even if she gives explicit consent here) any time where she hasn't had the guts to say "no, stop I don't want this to happen." and in some cases any sex that is decided to be disagreeable at some future time. Harassment has undergone the same transition too, at one time harassment meant behaviour explicitly intended to be disturbing and or threatening in nature. Now according to feminists harassment includes a casual greeting, comment or a funny look.
These are just a few examples off the top of my head, but they succinctly illustrate the power that simple linguistic changes can have. The very dictionary definition of feminism is a lie, misogyny makes any criticism of a female by a male sexist and the widened definitions of rape and harassment allow for draconian legal measures to be brought forth even when no such crimes were committed.
Some TRP guys reading this will be thinking "So what? Feminism isn't my problem." You would be right too, we won't win, nor will we change anything due to our association with the labels TRPer, MRA and misogynist. All of which have been co opted by the feminist language machine as ways to slur us and shut down our ideas.
So why would I write such a long post if it isn't TRP's problem?
I wrote this because I think understanding the power of language is a trait that all Alpha men require; and feminism provides a perfect contemporary example. Being able to use language like a scalpel in comparison to wielding it like a blunt object gives a man the ability to command respect with a wider range of people. It is a truly under appreciated skill and one that can easily be forgotten when immersed in the straight talking nature of TRP.
Anyone with a modicum of intelligence and the ability to see past their own ideology should be able to see the effect language has. Simply watching or reading the same news item from two politically opposed news sources can give all the evidence required. However this is a point missed by many ideologues the world over.
I recommend reading George Orwell's 1984 (a cliche I know) because it gives a concise and clear demonstration of the power that language and control over the narrative has. Orwell was so on point with his ideas he even has his own adjective.
Anyway I digress, this post grew from a shower thought and a comment by upon the dilution of the word nice when describing women. I do not promise to be a particularly literate or eloquent man. As such I imagine I have missed some nuances in this piece, some more notable examples and reading materials. So if any of you have anything to add or an honest critique of what I have written go ahead and shoot me a reply. I'd be happy to be proven wrong or taught more on the subject.
TLDR: Feminism as a movement has won the war for the English language and I believe it is the very foundation of what the modern movement stands for, has achieved and its future actions. For RP men it is a useful contemporary demonstration of the power of language to change the narrative and as such a useful lesson to any TRP man who wishes to harness this power. After all a true Alpha male in the modern world possesses the ability to captivate any audience when he speaks.
