I still think that paternity testing at birth should be madated by law. There is no downside to this policy.

In fact, the only argument against this policy would be to allow women the option to continue surreptitiously "gene shopping." So naturally, most women are highly offended at the mere suggestion of this policy and often respond with, "Don't you trust me?" Of course, if women know that any child they bear is going to be paternity tested then they know they'll be caught if they gene shop and, therefore, will be far less likely to try it.

Any woman who argues against this policy should be viewed as highly suspect because the only logical explanation is that she wants to keep her options open. I mean really, what is the harm if your husband/SO really is the dad...right?

This article was published in 2006, but it's actually a review of 67 previous publications. The problem is some of those publications are quite old. Table 1: Non-paternity Rates When Paternity Confidence is Relatively High

For example, 96% of the data sampled from the United States is more than 30 years old. In fact the non-paternity figure for the United States includes data published as far back as 1949!

This is absolutely NOT contemporary data.

I think it's safe to say that promiscuity rates have increased since 1949. Simultaneously, the availability of contraception has dramatically improved which I suspect would drive down non-paternity rates.

As your article notes, there have not been any random studies of the issue and so I don't think there is any way to estimate the actual rate.

More importantly.....

Paternity cheek swap mail-in test kits are available for less than $20 at Walgreens. Lab fees are around $130.

If you have even a shred of doubt, you might as well do a test.

I don't like the term mistaken paternity... wouldn't paternity fraud be a better term?

The real figure is between the extremes. I'd put the ballpark average at around 10%.
