I've been wanting to start taking boxing lessons for a while now. Been putting it off. Everyone is discouraging me, "You'll quit as soon as you take a punch", "It's bad for you and you'll get brain damage".

My grandfather was a tough man. He liked boxing. Had a 6 pack at eighty years old. Boxing was the last thing I talked to him about before he died. This isn't the most insightful post but it's one I needed to read. I'm gonna stop being a bitch and take the classes first thing tomorrow.

Sorry for your loss. I have a kid brother and could not be stoic. Thinking about that type of loss softens me.

Effective advice I was given before reading my dad's eulogy:

If you find yourself getting choked up with emotion while talking with friends or relatives at the wake or funeral, count backwards from 100 to yourself. The brain can't do both emotion and logic at the same time, and you'll regain your composure.

Thanks for posting, sorry about your loss. I think this is a balancing act that you must be careful with. It's easy to just act like nothing happened and practice escapism. But if you do not let your emotions be expressed they will linger inside you and cause you to feel shitty subconsciously. It's okay to cry about losing your brother... it's okay to take a moment to experience the loss. You don't need to protect yourself from feeling negative emotions in order to be a man. A man can handle the terrible feeling of actually experiencing the consequential emotions of a tragedy such as this. Avoiding it just delays the pain or prolongs it.

Definitely hit close to home considering my brother is 16; jaw dropped upon hearing this. Puts me into a better perspective of seizing the opportunites I see/want. Sorry for your loss mate but glad you've kept your frame, so to say...honesty would be tough to if I were in your position.
