Had a similar conversation with some girls in a bar once. Told them that all this love and marriage and forever stuff is just bullshit, went on a proper rant about it. (My early days of non-monogamy.) They looked upset. One of them cried a little.

Nothing good has ever come to me of enlightening women about this stuff.

Had this conversation once with a girl i knew back in HS. Basically i said that love is just a bunch of neuro-chemical reactions caused by hormones. She flipped the fuck out. Didnt talk to me for a couple of days. Went radio silent. She came crawling back.

Looking from downunder I have often described the American culture as "Stuck in the Romantic". You got through the Fantasy stage yet never made it to the Irony Stage. Rather than seeing things as they are warts and all, you hang on to the romantic belief that the good guy/girl wins the hot girl/rich guy in the end. This RomCom view is reinforced in all you mainstream media movies. It is driven by profit... a happy ending is better for the bottom line. Fukk reality it sucks who wants to see that. You only need to watch the original of any Hollywood remake. The European version the hero wakes up in a coffin. In the US version he is saved in the nick of time.

You all know the system is fukked. You see this when the hero has to fight the system and break the law to get the villain. Still the hero never kills the villain instead the villain's hateful rage makes him attack then slip and fall to his death. Always the romantic ending.

Everyone identifies as the good person. When you said this was idealist bullshit you threaten their self belief.

Always remember why we don't talk about TRP. people will forgive every lie, no matter how big or hurtful. They cannot forgive you for saying the truth.

Does anyone else have experience trying to discuss this with the other sex? I never have successfully been able to discuss this even with my most mature female friends...

When I was in college ten years ago I took a philosophy class called 'Love and Western Civilization'. In it we charted the various conceptions of love from the ancient Greeks, to early Christians, to the bards of Southern France who invented the very concept of unrequited courtly love.

I did much research and wrote many 15 page papers for my professor. When we had in-class discussions it was mostly the professor answering poignant college-level questions from the same two guys, me being one of them. Not only did none of the women in the class ever offer anything substantial to the discussion, when they happened to add an anecdote from their personal love lives it was usually out of context, filtered through their own poor perception (hamster), and generally off topic anyway.

Perhaps more clueless than the women were the majority of the men taking the class, who were using a philosophy 200 level course to pad their elective requirements for their degree program. These are guys who presumably are meant to one day marry and have children, and as the minority of college-going males, they are both in a position to become alpha-leaders, and at great risk to becoming beta-providers.

My point is that most people are clueless about most things, and wish to remain that way. College was mostly filled to the brim with stupid people. That class boiled down to the professor and two capable pupils, and a whole lot of male and female dead weight. If you have your eyes and ears truly open in this world, count yourself lucky and do your best to keep your wits about you. You can't speak the truth about most topics, it upsets people too much. Try to find one person who you can spill your guts to, and the rest of the time try to keep your mouth shut, because people don't want to hear the truth.
