Open relationships are actually a version of plate spinning. Most plate spinning is similar to a "Don't Ask Don't Tell" open relationship. The guy is not guaranteeing exclusivity and he would be wise to assume she is probably practicing the female version of plate spinning (from keeping orbiters nearby to actually fucking other guys). In Open Relationships the fact that everyone has options is just out in the open instead if implied. In Polyamory other partners are more emotionally involved and there may be "primary/secondary" setup. Open, poly and plate spinning are technically all forms of non-monogamy with different approaches and goals.

For the man it's a way of satisfying his need for sexual variety, for the women it's a way of satisfying her hypergamy...if they are mature and communicative then let them have at a relationship together, though it's more challenging than a traditional relationship so very few take it on unless they really can't live with monogamy. Some in the poly community claim that polyamory is more of a sexual orientation than a lifestyle choice, similar to how homosexuals say they were born gay. Let's face it there will always be some men who will never be able to commit to just one sexual partner, and there will always be some women who will never be able to suppress their hypergamy. If two poly people are together things can run smoothly, it's when a poly person and a monogamous person try to have a relationship that things get messy

I'm not advocating polyamory but I've spent a lot of time on the poly forums and I see some RP similarities in it and of course some strong differences (poly is a big advocate for women to have equal rights to plate spinning, they are anti-slut shaming like the feminists)

They're great when you're or both are actually having sex with other people.

The one who doesn't is getting the shit end of the stick and should either go out and get laid or just end the relationship - An open relationship is best done when both parties want/accept it, not one party saying "Buy me shit and let me fuck other people or else I'll let other people buy me shit and fuck other people", because you're not getting laid here either way.
