It's a heavily abused metaphor. It originates with the image of a hamster in one of those running wheels; racing frantically on instinct, but not really getting anywhere.

It refers to the way people act on instinct and then rationalize or justify their behavior after the fact. Add to that a frantic desperation to defend one's ego, and departure from any real semblance of logic, and you've got hamstering.

Hamstering is not about blaming men, that's just a common tactic. Its about a woman trying to justify doing what she wants often without admitting that she wants it, typically because she thinks she shouldn't want it.

It's particularly obvious when someone is doing something they think they shouldn't, like a woman hooking-up with an asshole ex she claims to hate or a feminist justifying her preference for misogynistic alpha males and her distaste for beta-feminist "Nice Guy" manginas.

It is a coping mechanism for our ego. By rationalizing bad behavior and decisions we remain comfortable. It is not gender specific, but women are much, much better at it in general. Hamstering is merely a slang term for the mental gymnastics people employ to justify anything they do which may be considered hypocritical, or how your brain (the hamster) has to run on a wheel to come up with a nonsensical argument to save face.

It is a confusing term for a lot of non native speakers as in a lot of languages hamstering means hoarding.
