If you're thinking that your Alpha mode failed, you don't have an understanding of what attraction is. The fact that you automatically predispose this as a matter of Alpha vs. Beta tells me that you are only taking into consideration personality characteristics, and not other critical factors (money, status, looks, etc.).

You can be nice to a girl when it's appropriate. The difference between Alpha nice and Beta nice is that an Alpha is nice on HIS terms, not hers.

Last week I had a house party, and while I knew most of the girls there (it's my house afterall), I still did some gaming, until late in the night when a girl who I apparently used to work in the same building as 10 years ago (i.e. back in high school) showed up and recognized me. It was super later, and her friend (who is "dating" my beta roommate) was wasted, so there was no calling for really pushing her envelope and laying game. Instead, I kept the wit, but toned down the push-pull and negging because the situation called for a more relaxed, casual-cool conversation.

So don't be afraid to tone it down WHEN APPROPRIATE, just make sure it's on YOUR terms.

at 16 the majority of girls are still romantic and want a cute guy. not a boring beta, but cuteness is the key driver.

at 17-18, social status becomes the most important thing. 18-24, fitness+alpha traits.

A valid question, but it doesn't really apply to women. Go into beta mode when you have a much stronger opponent but you want to sucker him. Usually he will then over estimate his abilities. You then randomly turn into alpha mode strike, then switch back into beta. Ironically the stronger the opponent the better it works. You repeatedly keep on doing this over a period of time. Eventually the opponent will start to question his abilities. And eventually he will weaken. It is similar to how you play a large fish on a line, when you let him have line, then reel him in.

I guess it is a form of gas lighting. I don't know if it will work with women, I never tried it.

First problem. Girls your age are looking at 18-22 year olds. Sometimes even older. Don't be afraid to grab a girl a couple years younger. In fact get used to it.

alpha mode

There is no such thing as alpha mode. You either are at the top of the pack or aren't. Alpha is money, power, status over other males. If you're at the top 20% of the 16 year old girl's demographic (every guy between 16 and 22) then yes, you're alpha.

Alpha is not a mindset, or a specific personality, or anything in particular. It's your perceived status as a male and how you leverage it. So tell me, are you ahead of the 18-20 year olds just because you're fit? Of course not, you're still a greenhorn.

Understand that you're not alpha, you're not at the top of the pack. That's the first step. Now, after realizing that you're near the bottom of these girl's lists, read the sidebar, and work on what needs improvement. You're not playing against women, but other men. Women are the ball and men are the players. That's what being alpha means.

THAT said, you're on the right track. More right than I was your age (I was a beta chump until I hit 21, and I'm still working on it 2 years later. If you really wanna have a sex life worth mentioning at 16, you're gonna have to work on your social connections. That's the only thing worth a damn at your age.

If you're a wrestler, you should go for older girls, like 18-20. If you're looking for a relationship, they'll have a better idea of what they want than a 16 year old.

Read The Natural by Richard Ruina. He explains seduction as starting with Mr. Attraction (actually it is just Mr. Alpha) followed by Mr. Comfort (that is the Beta you are referencing). You will attract girls being an asshole Alpha but you can't get them to take off their clothes unless you are able to make them comfortable with you.

How do you know? You observe and learn to read nonverbal cues and you pay attention to your target- they love that anyway so it works for everybody.

Beta traits are supplicating, acting like you're a servant, or a woman, to a woman.

That gets you nowhere positive.

You can be respectful, fun, cheery, happy all while being alpha. You don't have to be aloof or a jerk all the time, just able to do so when you know it's the time. Never switch out of alpha mode, just expand into being what an alpha is because it's just being the best male a man can be.
