It's so fucking expensive.

[–]Senior Contributorwhiskey_bearfist2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

its expensive to get the schooling, and its expensive to practice with MP insurance and decreasing reimbursement rates from all sources except Workers' Compensation court ordered care.

god i fucking hate insurance. look how many insurance companies there are. they literally exist by understanding statistics and playing the odds that you will never need to use a fraction of how much you (or your company) pay into it. as a business, its brilliant, but i can still hate what i respect.

Why do you hate insurance, especially when the alternative can be catastrophic debt or inability to pay for care?

insurance and the sue-happy legal environment of the USA drives up costs of healthcare.

i agree with your points in theory, but the reality is that the majority of people who pay insurance throughout their lives are losing thousands of dollars, even with a number of significant operations.

my insurance is 400 dollars a month. thats almost 5 grand a year, and i havent been to the doctor in years. thousands. just gone.

they are profiting off of fear. its brilliant.

US insurance companies make an average of 3% profit from the funds that they deal with.

The reason why the US health system sucks is because of all the government mandates. For example, a young, single male in Virginia must be pooled in with medical conditions not related to him in the slightest (eg: ovarian cancer) and can't set excess limits, so the policy must cover doctor visits, etc... Ultimately, the policy will cost him over $500/month.

Contrast this to Texas that has few government mandates on what must be covered, and he is able to set a high excess level, so, if he chooses a policy wisely, he can be insured for under $100/month.

But couldn't a man in Virginia just purchase a Texas healthcare policy? NOPE, not allowed to buy across state lines.

And then you have things that are not medical expenses, like birth control or Viagra, that are insured from lobbying government. Even marriage counselling is insurable in some states.

Insurance should be for high cost, low probability events. However the US government has created an uncompetitive health insurance market, and also fixed the system so low cost items can be claimed on insurance, and they must be included in premiums. To claim that insurance is inherently evil is such a bizarre position to have.

If you can, go HDHP with HSA your rates will be almost nothing.

Insurance companies are the scum of the earth, my dad runs a big collision center and you should hear the shit they try to pull to save money and screw over their own customers.

I would probably be inclined to dismiss your anecdotal evidence, except that you haven't even provided that.

The worst part of this is that the government deliberately set out to make these professions female dominated. This could seriously jeopardize healthcare in all Western countries.

[–]JohnPeel4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If perhaps some of these women were inspired to enter the profession by Florence Nightingale, they might want to take her life style to heart - she was childless, unmarried and hated feminism. That's also probably why she was so successful.

As a woman, I prefer male doctors. I know this is slightly off topic, but it does serve to support the idea that more men should be getting medical training than women.

Women are fucking mean to each other. I don't like seeing female doctors in general and refuse to see a female Ob/Gyn. When you tell a man that something is wrong in your nether regions, he's on top of the situation getting results- because he is absolutely appalled. "You're period has run over by two weeks?!?" practically shoves medicine down your throat A woman will tell you to suck it up and stop being such a sissy.

If malpractice and whatnot wasn't such a big deal and true free market rates for health care abounded, I would be up for it.
