I live in the UK and I got into a 'debate' with someone who was a proudly declared Socialist the other night - I used to have a moron friend that scoffed and sneered at me when I said Socialism/Communism wasn't a spent force in our country, just a dormant one - so this was simultaneously edifying and worrying.
Now I'm a pretty good communicator in general and I'm happy to see things from another's perspective and concede a lack of perfection in my own ideas so that I can open a potentially hostile individual to see things from another angle - BUT - this guy was just a fucking brick-wall and couldn't wait to start tossing labels at me and making broad, sweeping statements about how The Left does good simply because it isn't The Right.
I agree with you that it needs to be stopped OP, and I've seen Jordan discuss Post-Modernism before, but it's a losing battle pal. The Left has become far too indoctrinated in their Proxy religion and Post-Modernism has been the kindling for that fire.
"The most Evil idea is one that thinks it has nothing left to learn" - The mighty JBP.
"Seize the rich's assets and give them to the homeless." - Jeremy Corbyn, aping the Communist mantra nicely, even though he's "Not a Communist."

but it's a losing battle pal
I used to believe that. But I see more and more young kids (18yo) who don't buy into the bullshit and are quite doubtful of the rhetoric of 25-30yo losers. I think there is opportunity of change just like the crack epidemic was reversed by a generation seeing what are the consequences.

Wind the clock-back about 3 weeks and I'd say you are absolutely correct but, as I say, I live in the UK and our general election result was practically a crime against humanity.
A party led by a man similar to Bernie Sanders, but without the Charisma or common-sense, managed to get only 780,000 less votes than the Conservative party who had hitherto been riding high on huge approval ratings.
It's Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party I'm talking about of course and he has two Stalinist's as close advisers, has praised IRA bombings, has called for a £10.00 minimum wage and basically spent his entire career praising people who have attacked Great Britain and it's allies.
A political Rubicon has been crossed, we are all now on the highway to Hell.

Indeed, UK is at a crossroads and the Postmodernist left is fighting to death and let's be honest, the tories are a joke. People are fed up with their antics.
It'll be an uphill battle but I think it's not lost.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I hope you are correct.
Re the 'Tories' - the fact people still call them that demonstrates my next point nicely - they are ghastly at PR and people conflate that with them having terrible policies.
We each have the capacity in our modern era to be well-informed and educated about everything going on in our countries and yet more than ever people are seduced by soundbites and snappy Social Media campaigns - it's pathetic.
For what it is worth, I hope you are right and the battle is still to play for.

A lack of proper education and life experience will make you very susceptible to propaganda, as you lack intellectual and emotional tools to deal with manipulation and fallacious arguments.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Can't argue with that.
The False Dichotomy reigns supreme at the moment, it's either GOT to be this or it's GOT to be that - no middle-ground at all.
In fact, Corbyn's Labour manifesto was pretty much full of that shit.

I think Corbyn would probably quite like to be the "Great Leader that never was" and just spin out his days in opposition but John McDonnell (Stalinist, Marx-lover and Prize Prick) is agitating for public dissent and calling for the Conservative government to be overthrown by demand - YES that's right - the Shadow Chancellor is calling for an end to democracy, and people voted for this man. It depends how many crises erupt in the next few months, if the Conservatives can weather the storm we might just survive, if not then I want to go live in Japan.

19M college student here. There's a pretty good divide, although I'd say it's more polarized now than ever. However, with Bernie losing this year, a lot of my generation have seen the error of their ways and at least aren't as willing to start spewing bullshit as they were last year.
I also want to point out that most people who would otherwise be traditional conservatives (myself included) tend to trend towards a more libertarian social policy. Just something to consider.
[–]heytherecutiemcbooty0 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I don't see how Bernie losing made anyone see the errors of their ways. I voted for Bernie and will still believe the same things regardless of whether or not he lost.

I honestly doubt there are more 18 year olds that are like this in proportion to 25 or 30 year olds. I think everyone's just louder now. And honestly the high school kids that are not like that are just as god awful as the older Marxists. They removed mirrors in a California high school and replaced them with signs and stuff. The faculty didn't just do that. The kids did that too.
It'll have to be a cultural alliance across generations but I don't even know because if you're like us you're an evil sexist Nazi.

Precisely, us youths aren't that blind. I think the internet educated us in a way that we are more aware of larger ideas that conflict and the different sides and from there we can choose, albeit we can still be very impressionable but that's youth- that won't ever change. I believe, there's more than meets the eye to the idea that it's a losing battle.
Edit: Ironically, I think that it is exactly the acknowledgement of the different existing sides, a characteristic of postmodernism, that makes us less gullible. Maybe postmodernism isn't all that stupid, it is the child of everything that has happened since the Romans, we didn't arrive here by fluke.

Responsibility can cure that
If I'm responsible for something, I'd better fucking own it.
Too much these days involves making men work for something, making men responsible for its well-being, and then (after they do all the work) it's taken away from them. Men are told to "grow up" when they conclude this is a shitty deal.
Examples: your job, your marriage/wife, your house, your wealth, your car, your children.
All expect total commitment. All get taken away from you on someone else's whim. You work for these things, then you're beholden to other people to allow you to keep what you already earned.
Everything and everyone has let me down in life except one thing. There is only one thing that has always worked, always been there for me, never let me down when I've needed it and has worked with 100% reliability.
That thing is money.
[–]Omnibrad0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The most hilarious and depressing thing about Post-Modernism is at its core, they don't believe in truth. Facts and evidence have no sway. How in the world can you convince someone of your point of view, or even find common ground, when factual evidence is not their currency. At its core, Post-Modernism is so easily refutable. That is what makes this whole thing mind boggling.
You have to be smart to be so goddamn stupid, and that's what these University Marxists are. Post-Modernism maintains that all truth is subjective; there are many different stories, and many different facts depending on your personal circumstances, the balance of power and the perspective lens through which you are viewing the situation.
Isn't it funny how the claim, "All truth is subjective," is an objective claim? This is literally a self-refuting ideology. All truth is subjective except for your Post-Modernist garbage eh? Post-Modernism itself is the one objective fact we have.... The lunacy of this. And all of it comes from a Marxist realm of thought. Marxism truly is the greatest ideological cancer to ever affect society.
[–]Helmut_Newton0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Objective truth is irrelevant to post-modernism because post-modernism is a secular religion. Think about it: to it's adherents, it's doctrine must not be questioned. And anyone who publicly criticizes it must be ex-communicated and publicly shamed.
The only good thing about the sitation is that they are painting themselves into a corner as more and more ordinary people are getting tired of their BS.
[–]OGlancellannister1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nice analogy. The ideology itself isn't religious, but so many of its proponents definitely do treat it as such.
[–]sssimasnek-1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Post modernism doesn't actually contend that it cannot be questioned. Quite the opposite actually, a core message is question everything.
[–]sssimasnek0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
No ideology is entirely reputable. One must look at the perspective it can offer to explain or view certain specific phenomena. To dismiss it entirely would be ignorant. Also, there is no objective claim in post modernism.
Again, to dismiss Marxism entirely would be ignorant also. It ain't offers a different view on the world and is important to form balanced ideas. You don't have to agree with it to see its importantance. The extremes serve to balance society somewhere in the middle.
[–]OGlancellannister1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Also, there is no objective claim in post modernism.
Post-Modernism makes the objective claim, that there are no objective claims. It makes the objective claim that every truth comes in varying degrees, and depends on historical, political and social factors. The assertion that there is no objective truth, is in itself an objective claim.
I can agree that rarely does an ideology have 0 merits. I would not dismiss Marxism entirely; it can still be used as a guide of how not to structure society. Some of the world's most terrible ideologies spring from branches of Marxism. Post-Modernism and today's brand of Feminism are examples of these.
[–]sssimasnek0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I would argue that it doesn't accept objectively that there is no objective truth, but rather rejects the notion that there is.
Semantic point, but significant nonetheless.
I actually find post modernism quite interesting from a philosophical standpoint. To what extent is anything 'real'? Doesn't mean I have to agree with applying it to other contexts.
[–]OGlancellannister1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I'm with you on the philosophical point. It is interesting when you examine it from a meta perspective. But if we're talking about the "real world," where most of us live, there is no place for it. It is utterly useless in determining how we should structure our societies.
My point is that making a non-claim is still a claim. I never said it accepts anything objectively; rejecting the notion that there is objective truth is the same as saying there is no objective truth. That in itself is an objective claim. We use language to distill our thoughts and semantically, on it's most base level, Post-Modernism is logically cannibalistic. It is a self-refuting ideology.
It makes for interesting philosophical study, but it also makes no evidence-based claims that can stand up to scrutiny. The fact that we fund these Post-Modernists who for the most part contribute nothing of worth to society is particularly troubling.
[–]sssimasnek0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah I think we can both agree that in theory it is interesting but it's usefulness in practice is limited.
[–]OGlancellannister0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you ever run into a real Deconstructionist, be sure to ask abt Paul de Man. He is was considered to be a founder of the movement, but then it turned out he had a raging case of "Waldheimer's" Disease where you conveniently forget that you used to be a NAZI. /smirk
Beyond that, Deconstructionism is a weapon that the weak use against the strong. It should be rooted out and destroyed, and its adherents killed with fire.
[–]TRP VanguardHumanSockPuppet1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
We are united against postmodernism, but we are not organised against it.
The Red Pill is not a movement. It is box of tools to help you avoid being a lackey in someone else's bid for power.
We are already "fighting" against postmodernism by refusing to be its pawns, by refusing to apologize for having our own agendas, and by demanding respect and payment (in whatever form) from anyone who wants our time and effort.
But unless our agendas intersect and we make allies of one another, we needn't organise to resist it. Anyone who says otherwise, and tries to approach you with platitudes instead of payment, is trying to make you their pawn.
Never forget this.
[–]DentyneWhite 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You nicely summed up the mindset difference between Red Pill and MGTOW
Both recognize how reality has lined up to make us slaves.
TRP teaches a man to break free and save himself and follow his own path.
MGTOW cries out and bands together with other losers to demand justice so they have no need to change

Peterson says almost nothing about postmodernism (the mode/school of thought) except as a demonic intellectual cancer. Is it really? What even is postmodernism? What is its context? These questions aren't answered; there is little reference to the actual work of postmodernists, no quotes from the texts, no corroboration from other scholars reading the postmodernists, etc. Peterson has the great opportunity to lie to you in this situation. And you didn't do anything to backcheck his claims. You called Derrida "Jack Derrida" lol. You don't know Derrida's first name and didn't bother to google it. You don't even know that he was French. I think it's likely that you haven't read any of his works. Rather than gathering the essence of postmodernism from the second-hand accounts of intellectuals who refuse to characterize the movement with any sort of evidence, I think you would benefit from reading Derrida on your own or at least referring to a secondary source that will corroborate its claims.

This is only a thing in the universities, and a university degree is less valuable than ever. Experience and connections trumps which college you went to. 95% of the value you get in college is in the people you meet.
In the real world, no one gives a fuck about postmodernism. People want money, status, and comfort.
Don't buy into this victimization mindset of Peterson. He's a charlatan anyways.
[–]sssimasnek1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Interesting, I just did an essay on a similar topic. I would argue that this is an oversimplification of postmodernism and blurs the lines between it and neo-Marxism. The video does make some good points. Though, ideologies are almost always limited when used to try to explain everything. The reductionist and individualism critiques are more academically sound than simply not liking it though.
[–]iwasbornred1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The problem to me with criticizing postmodernism is it's so broad that you could have two postmodernists that disagree on nearly everything.
To me it's more a way of approaching ideology than an ideology itself.
The real problem is leftism, socialism, Marxism, communism. Basically collectivism. People thinking that everybody needs to be a part of their group and think like them. Oh, and pay for them, because anything that's alive and breathing deserves to be given free shit.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding postmodernism or the wiki definitions are off, but I'm not seeing it as the problem. It's people who are postmodernists and using postmodern lines of thinking to arrive at their own ridiculous conclusions.

Nice PR-Stun from this dude. Getting famous by being a intellectual car-salesman. Alt-right morrons jumping on him like he is a life-boat on the Titanic.
All he does is mixing half-truth with easy "Fuck this!" statements nobody can be against. Universities waste money? Who would have thought that? People think crazy stuff and average 18 year old students are idiots? Oh, who would have thought that?
All these people being indoctrinated by evil postmodernism? Lets indoctrinated them with out own brand of bullshit ideology, "Freedom™". I could write a speech like that for liberals who hate right-wing ideology at universities in like 10 minutes. Buzzword-bingo sounds great, everyone would cheer! But what does that proof?
Anyone who actually can think for themselves should understand the truth is somewhere in the middle. Some postmodern ideas have merit. On the other hand, the average postmodernist is as stupid as the average marxist as the average capitalism fanboy. Talking to them is actively making you more stupid than before.
If you want to learn something, talk to the intellectual top 1% of the movement. Maybe the number of people is even smaller, in the two-digit range. Its the same here. Talk to the top posters of TRP and you will have people who know their shit. One of the average 300k people here? Good luck with that.
He is a perfect example of double-speech. "I'm open to dialogue!" while pushing his own, underlying agenda. He feeds off open disgust for the other side and actually doesn't have to do any work to proof his points. People want to believe him, so they do. And since he is using half-truth, you can't call him a liar.
Yeah, there is a fucking clown-show going on at universities and other places. But is postmodernism the only scourge we have to deal with? I'm pretty sure deep-red states are not the biblical paradise as well. He is doing the same stuff he accuses postmodernism off: Not talking/respecting the other side while pretending to be the best/ignoring the shit going on at your side.
Good sales-pitch but otherwise very underwhelming, sorry.

Never seen Peterson disrespect, call names etc to anyone outside of the debate of ideas. Could you source that?
Freedom as an ideology is classic. If it was so easy you would be doing it! As a clinical psychologist I bet he could tell you more about the pitfalls of freedom than you could imagine.
[–]Inelukie 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
"We should defund universities because they produce crap"
That was not about him personally call someone names, but "his side". Find any good old "Freedom!!!" Trump support and there is a good chance they will call other names. Same for the common postmodernistic pleb. Small philosophers rarely call others names, yes.
Freedom as an ideology is classic. If it was so easy you would be doing it!
I'd rather take my system we have now and improve it, thanks. I don't like Libertarian thought much.
As a clinical psychologist I bet he could tell you more about the pitfalls of freedom than you could imagine.
True. Unless his field is bogus, too. Which Psychology and Medical stuff arguably is. Oh wait, that is kinda awkward. To be in the "Oh boy, we suck so much!" department, too.

[–]Lexapro99 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I know nothing? You don't seem to have any justification for that statement.
[–]hexagonsol0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Your first fault is thinking there's a possibility off a healthy dialogue with post modernists in academia, how can you reach a conclusive truth with post modernists? Look for yourself https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Jordan+peterson+debate a result : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1P_1mLlJik , so with whom can you actually reach some conclusion? As seen on his patreon : "I also plan to start a series of conversations with moderate Muslims about the possibility of developing a bridge between that faith and the fundamental beliefs of the West. That will start June 1 with a discussion with Ayaan Hirsi Ali." He's not pushing a us vs them because "them" don't move outside their ideological boxes because they have none, but also do, postmodernism amirite? This kid : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX5yys2GZwM is not them, the first youtube link I sent you is them, don't get them confused.
Let me putt this scenario in visual terms : You're looking at a medieval battlefield, both sides are fighting, your solution is to get into the middle off the fight and solve this 50 year old battle with words by promoting a dialogue, no one will hear you or care and you will die, I hope I got my point across, cheers.
[–]Inelukie 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Your scenario is a good example for how both sides are acting, yes. And why do they act like that? Because its well worth it! On the SJW side there is money to be made. On the other side....there is money to be made. Essentially its a pit-fight, where the spectators pay to see people fight to the teeth and occasionally get into the ring themselves.
Both have good incentives not to reach a consensus here. Saying "Well, yes, being kind would be cool now and then!" undermines his position. Saying "Feelings don't matter that much, lets all calm down!" would oust you as a SJW.
In practice, we could all be reasonable human beings treating each other with respect. But nobody likes that. Both sides want the fight. And SJWs often went too far down the rabbit-hole and become very weird. Thats what always happens when an ideology becomes the very core of your being.
Just why would we pretend its about something honorable here? Because he says its about "The Truth"? I'm not saying he is a douchebag. I'm saying he stepped into a poop throwing contest expecting a real debate and then is outraged that people throw poop instead of debating.
You can have the same kind of "crazy talk" with other degrees though. Very smart people, which happen to be dumb as a rock in other parts of what makes up the world and society. Crazy is crazy and dumb is dumb.

I would agree - because there is less resistance that way - but in the Modern age you've got far too many kids (with professors teaching them) looking up far too much shit about political systems that claim to have all the solutions and in effect "answer Humanity".

No you slow down "pal" Anytime you want to have government run everything in a "controlled economy" you have to question the people in charge. Dictatorship or oligarch. And Communism isn't a representative government so you dont get to pick who's making the decisions and they don't have a bill of rights. And the labor camps have nothing to do with communist economics? lol Do you even know what what you're talking about? Please educate everyone on communist economics. I'll be waiting.

In Afghanistan, I have visited villages where issues are voted upon, and wealth + labor is shared among the whole community. That's an example of a real functioning Democratic political system combined with a communal economy

dude of course communism works with small villages. Try it with a nation.
"real cummunism, there isnt a government"? How can "real" Communism not be a government when it was created as a government to counter the ? lol
What you're describing is Emma Goldman Anarchism, dip shit.
And I can bring up North Korea because we were talking on a national scale not a tiny village.
You mean communism and democracy worked together at a microscale. (Ahh yeH, case closed)

Very true, a lot of misinformation in this thread. Kind of ironic, the 'sweeping statements' made
Actually, it really isn't surprising at all. If the working class believe they are exploited, a revolution that sees them share the spoils of the wealthy would be quite an appealing prospect. This is regardless of whether or not you believe communism is a good system.
I understand why they think it's a good idea, what I don't understand is why they fail to think about (and research about) why it isn't.

You think liberals care about freedom of speech? Freedom of responsibility? There is no hope to eliminate liberalism from college campuses any time soon.
After a year of going to one of the most liberal universities in the US, I can assure you that college campuses will be infected with liberalism for the foreseeable future. All we can do as men is to learn as much as we can, lift hard as fuck, and raise little ones to act as true men.
