So, a friend just got dumped by his girlfriend of two years.
Before I continue, let me say that I'm from Europe, and the dating scene is less extreme than in the USA. Sure, there are the WAATGM, the reasonably attractive girls that won't give a normal looking guy the time of day (and on the other side, the "nice" guys and incels), but it's all less extreme, there's still a lot of women for which "have your shit together, make her laugh" are important qualifiers. That being said, I think the woman I'm going to talk about is primed to shout WAATGM in a few years time.
My friend is in the first half of his thirties, his now-ex late in her twenties. I happened to know her before the relationship started, she's part of a friend group my wife is also a part of.
Before the relationship started, we never saw her outside of big group events. We tried to invite her for stuff with smaller groups of people (like game night or a barbecue) a few times, but found that she was too busy enjoying her college lifestyle to hang out with the "old" people (us being in our late twenties back then and she being early in her twenties), so eventually we just stopped inviting her.
In this group of friends, where most have now married the partners they've been with since they were halfway through their twenties or younger, she's made a name for herself for being the one who doesn't take dating seriously at all, who juggles dating several dudes at once. Which would be fine if she's honest to those dudes about it, except then she met my friend, who didn't want to play around.
For the two years the relationship lasted, things seemed to go well - she started calming down, being monogamous, coming with him to the smaller social gatherings, and they started talking about living together after she'd graduate. Important detail here, she's been "almost" graduated for over two years now, but seems to love her student association and that lifestyle too much to actually finish those final couple of papers and move on.
Then, this summer, she dumped him (out of the blue, according to him), the day before her student association's "surfboards 'n shots" week abroad - yes, she still goes to her student association's events even though for all those people she's now about four to ten years their senior. Not to mention that you'd think such a retreat, where it can get pretty difficult to keep your distance, would've been cancelled this year due to safety precautions.
Anyway, there we have it. Late twenties girl, breaks up with a funny guy who has his shit together and who's at about the same "not ugly, not an Adonis/Aphrodite" level on the hotness scale as her (maybe him a liiiittle bit higher) because it's "too serious" and "she just wants to have fun for now", leaving him with the feeling confused as he thought they were actually planning to get more serious soon, without the chance to talk about whatever problems she might've thought they were having. But, she's made up her mind and "feels better now that she took this step", which is about as much justification as he's getting. Sad for both sides, for entirely different reasons.
