I wouldn't actually call them shit tests. It's more like acts of dominance.

I.e. by putting your hand on a guys shoulder you are establishing dominance. It even starts with things as simple as eye-contact, taking up more space than necessary and so on.

Just start observing people's behaviour very closely, especially towards you, and you will be surprised how people are constantly trying to negotiate their place in the hierarchy and how subtle this is taking place.

You can then actually use this to your advantage to raise your percieved status.

The National Geographic documentary "Ape Man Alpha Male" has a good amount of those things in it. Highly recommended.

Speaking of females, when you are escalating you are basically shit-testing her.

I think the closest thing to a male version of a shit test would be ball-breaking. It isn't really the same but you can weed out bitchy/pussy/hotheaded dudes by breaking their balls until they crack.

Women shit test to see if you're the real deal, and also to try and destabilize you. Think of a child testing boundaries and rebelling against a parent.

Guys do it to other guys to establish a hierarchy, whether they consciously realize it or not. Let's imagine you have a group of friends. You joke around with each other and see how close you can come to insulting them, while still keeping it friendly. Then somebody cracks a devastating mom joke and shit gets real - he crossed a line.

Shit test thrown.

Now it's up to the other guy to either defend himself and put his friend is his place, or else let it go. But if he lets it go, then he establishes that it's open season on his mom, because the ball-busting will continue until they find his limits and he retaliates. A guy who will let anybody say anything they want about him without drawing boundaries and enforcing them - even among friends - will appear weak and he will be the butt of the jokes among the guys in the group.

It's the same with women - if you let them walk all over you, they will have zero respect for you and they will come to resent you and your weakness.
