Alpha is a relative term. In a vacuum, nobody is "Alpha." You're only Alpha because other people seem less Alpha. If she thinks you are Alpha, she no longer thinks the other guy is Alpha. If she thinks he is Alpha, you are no longer Alpha. Girls know guy's resource is commitment. So if she struggled to get commitment from a past guy, yet gets it from you, you seem less Alpha de-facto.

Disclaimer: that can be avoided in a certain situation. One girl I LTR'd once was FWB with a huge beta male before we met. The thing is, she used to be chubby too. By time I was with her, she was a HB8 and said beta was in an LTR with a HB5. She said she was absolutely disgusted with herself for ever even having liked him, let alone that he didn't even like her back. But again it comes back to the important point--she was basically disgusted because she knew her SMV had increased and it made her prior arrangement a non-option in the current day and girls live in the now. Under normal circumstances, the guy who doesn't commit seems like he has the highest value.
