I'm currently on a work placement at my university, so only get to see my flatmates when I visit them at the weekends. Over the past month or so I've been trying to work on my frame, in particular being a bit more selfish and more masculine.

All my flatmates currently see me as the 'easy-going, nice guy' of the group, and I want to change that. I've started being less of a pushover, by doing the following:

  • Not putting in money for a friend's birthday present (she didn't for my birthday, and she's not a super-close friend anyway, so why?)

  • Not giving away my hoodie when one of the girls ask for it on a night out cause they're cold (should have brought their own...)

  • Not sharing my food/buying drinks for people on nights out (I used to do both regularly, it killed my bank balance and people took advantage)

My only issue with altering my frame like this is that I'm also flatmates with 2/3 incredibly generous guys who actively go out of their way to buy stuff for other people. In their own words, it makes them happy to see others happy... This makes me then look like a stiff because I won't do something as simple as give one of the girls one of my jelly babies, or it makes me look like a 'bad friend' cause I'm not putting in for a birthday present.

Basically, because my male friends are so BP with their generosity (which is well liked/respected by the girls), I'm worried that my attempts at becoming more Alpha, are actually making me come across as an unrespected douchebag.

We already have a guy in the group who attempts Alpha behaviour but has no success - he's arguably the most masculine in the group, but comes across as a total prick, everyone dislikes him.

I don't want to end up like this guy, but am struggling to find ways of gaining respect without performing 'beta' actions, as 'Alpha' behaviours just seem to garner disapproval from the group.

Am I completely barking up the wrong tree here? Is it a case that on the face of it people dislike my new Alpha behaviour, but deep down they respect it? Or am I just doing something completely wrong?

TL;DR: Live with incredibly generous BP's, is using Alpha behaviour making me look like a dick or not?

EDIT 1: Thanks for all the comments guys, it seems like I'm pretty much on the right track, but just need to make sure that I don't move too fast and alienate people by having such a rapid change from nice guy to alpha so quickly.
