Being ruthless as a salesperson is useless if you can't also be empathetic and charming. Making a sell is a lot like getting a good date - you have to be able to push and pull equally. Not caring about the "feelings" of others in cases like these comes more in being wiling to telling people they will be happier if they buy your product, even if they don't need it. Treat your customers with only ruthlessness and no politeness or friendliness and no one is going to want to do business with you.
