Generally when with a new partner I'll give them a good solid smell test first. Also a bit of an inspection (without being obvious about it) for anything that looks like a sore or a lesion. Starting with fingers before you get your mouth involved is good for this.

If you smell something bad or see anything that looks like a problem, abort obviously.

To quote your regional utility service provider; "always call before you dig". Just kidding. 95% of sti's are the kind that are easily treatable with ATB's, but can be dormant for many people. I had this happen to me once with chlam, just took a round of antibiotics and I stopped pissing razorblades. The 95% that are treatable this way have no discernable signs. If a girl had it, and had symptoms, she WOULD treat it immediately and wouldn't be contagious. If she was dormant, she wouldn't be able to answer you accurately. If she had the more nasty 5% that are lifers, they're generally only contagious when there's physical symptoms (aside from HIV of course). In short, nothing to gain from asking really. Just have a good insepction, and if there's a red flag, then ask.

Aside from that man, you're probably overthinking it.
